The Rafique family opened their Sydenham shop in March
2005. They are not new to the area having lived in Lewisham for thirty years
and built a substantial food retailing business in Croydon.
The shopfront honours their father Haji who established
the company in Bradford in 1969. Haji helped develop the UK based Halal meat
business through abbatoirs based in Keighley and Halifax. Haji expanded
southwards and in 1976 opened his Lewisham Halal meat business.
Haji & Sons are now one of the biggest suppliers of
Halal carcass lamb and mutton in the south of England using qualified muslim
slaughtermen to supply other wholesalers and retailers.
Haji died in 1996 and business passed to his two sons
Aslam & Shabir. They opened a shop and wholesale Halal business in 1997 at
267 London Road, Croydon. This expanded in 2001 with a neighbouring shop as an
international food centre selling fresh fruit, vegetables, afro-caribbean
specialities and much more. This was followed in 2002 with another neighbouring
shop selling fresh and frozen fish.
The Sydenham shop is the next development of Haji
& Sons - now as private limited company. The shop combines all the primary
businesses - the Halal butchery, fresh fruit & vegetables, continental
& afro-caribbean groceries and frozen fish.
The Rafiques have further ambitions to expand with a
dedicated industrial unit to include a 50 ton purpose built coldstore,
packaging facilities and offices.
Aslam stressed that quality and service are
fundamentals to the business. Haji's Halal processing methods are validated to
the highest Halal meat standard. They have been awarded with HACCP Foundations
Cerficates by the Health and Safety Royal Society for the Promotions of Health.
Haji's sales personal and technical experts are always willing to assist with
any advice and enquiries you may have.
Haji & Sons brings to Sydenham a greater variety
of foods from around the world - and Yorkshire! |
