Shoppers expecting to buy their paper, fags and a
bottle of milk were shocked to find Budgens closed today - for good!
Budgen's - occupying a prominent position in the
Narborhood & Post Office block was this morning deserted, the windows
white-washed and a notice saying it had closed at 7am this morning. The flower
seller who has occupied the pitch outside for many years said that she was as
surprised as anyone having no inkling of the closure. Geraldine of Kirkdale
Bookshop and chair of Sydenham Traders was shocked when she heard the news. "A
real blow for Sydenham" she exclaimed.
Many people will remember the store as a 7/11. This
chain was acquired by Budgens in 1997 and rebranded as Budgens Express. Open 24
hours a day, 7 days a week, Budgens Express aimed to meet the needs of its
local customers - whether local residents, office workers or late night party
goers, no matter what time of night or day.
No more.
We will be trying to contact the Budgens press office
on Monday to find out what was behind this unexpected closure. Please check
back - or if you know more let us know here .....
