Paintings by John Kelly
Normally the opening of
another painting exhibition is an opportunity for Sydenham's Silver Glitterati
to sup bordeaux, munch chilli flavoured tasties and have worrying conversations
about Sydenham Road's continued decline into pound shop alley.
This new exhibition is different. It is not aimed at
adults at all. Its not even aimed at people who can even read ... it is aimed
at bringing Art as a widening experience to the very young. To see things in
exciting and new ways, to be funny, to be memorable and be very, very
strange.

John Kelly literally lived "above the (book)shop".
Since then he has gone down in the Sydenham World - to Girton Road. There he
illustrates children's books. Now 42 and married to Kathy who collaborates with
as wordsmith John has had a career at Dorland Kindersley and in illustrating
science, natural history and history books. Is John now, at last, on the edge
of the big time?
His latest books "'Guess Who's Coming for Dinner?"
& "Scoop!" have both been shortlisted for the Kate Greenway Awards. "Guess
Who?" was the runner-up for the 2006 BBC Books-to-Read-out-Loud award. It is
also in development for a CGI feature film. Both, needless to say, are
available at the Kirkdale Bookshop.

Notable at last night's preview were some more elderly
kids with a little more pocket money were using their own toddlers, or their
relative's children, or just kids yet to come as an excuse to buy one or two
for posterity. However all will remain on show until 30th June. The exhibition
is FREE. Just walk into the shop, the main gallery is at the back on the left
though there are extra pictures elsewhere on the premises. Enjoy!
