Some intrepid Sydenhamites got up early Sunday to
welcome the first London Overground service to Sydenham. It arrived only 7
minutes late to whisk them off to the delights of Dalston Junction.
Sunday was a day of balloons, free tickets and even
more trainspotters. The old East London Line underground has now become the
jewel in the crown of Ken Livingstone's dream of renovating and putting in new
railway infrastructure to serve local needs for modest investment. A
disappoinment that it has been rebranded Overground but at least the extension
south to Sydenham, Crystal Palace and West Croydon puts us firmly on the Tube
Map. See here:

Putting Sydenham on the Map will, no doubt, help local
estate agents market some of the best value in London property to people who
would have not have a clue where Sydenham is - or our unrivalled network of
three different railway services to London Bridge, Victoria, Cannon Street and
now Canary Wharf via Surrey Quays. Plus the benefits of inner london Zone 3
charging but many outer London benefits.
The new service has come at a cost. Less services to
London Bridge and the axing of the off peak Charing Cross service. Neverthelss
with up to twelve trains an hour in each direction Sydenham Station is one of
the best connected surburban stations. Hopefully making us a beter place to
live and get to work.
