Most of our gas comes through cast iron pipelines laid
around a century ago under our roads. These are subject to corrosion and
landshift - particulary under the pressure of heavy traffic. Hence there is a
safety programme to replace 56,000 miles of iron pipes that lie within 30
metres of residential property. That includes most of London's main
roads!
The iron mains are being replaced with polyethylene
pipes. Polyethylene is a plastic material, is flexible and is highly resistant
to corrosion. The life of a PE main is currently expected to be of at least 80
years. |
