Hall Drive from Lawrie Park Gardens - 22/08/04
Photograph 1
Hall Drive was the carriage road of Sydenham Hall - the home of the Lawrie family built in 1805. The Hall was demolished in 1939. It is an attractive and sought after road by estate agents. This view from Lawrie Park Gardens shows the gate, lack of pavement and the typical 'post & chains' to keep traffic off the grass borders.

A short way along is an unusual crescent shaped contemporary development of split level terraced homes. They have tiny back gardens and short piece of tarmac at the front but overlook a pleasant green - which children are not encouraged to enjoy!

This view from the green shows some of the wide variety of invidual building styles of the houses. These vary from 'Mock Tudor' through 'Arts & Crafts' to ''Contemporary 1960s'.

Hall Drive is one of the few remaining private roads in Lewisham. It is maintained by the residents who have a fearsome reputation for keeping order amongst themselves and stopping intruders from using it as a parking area.

The photographs were taken in August 2004. The historical information was taken from John Coulter & John Seaman's "Sydenham & Forest Hill" which has some photographs of Hall Drive from around 100 years earlier.

I moved to the Crescent in Hall Drive in 2003 with my wife. We are huge fans of this type of 1960's architecture and had been looking at similar properties all around the Dulwich area. We fell in love with the property immediately and were particularly struck by the amazing peace and quiet afforded by the cut off location.

The back gardens are small but manageable and you may be interested to know we have a further large communal garden behind the properties which is surrounded by many mature trees. The houses themselves present amazing value for money, light, spacious, masses of storage, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a garage ... you'd have to be a millionaire to afford the same in a period property.

Be careful if you fancy driving down to take a look, Hall Drive has the highest speed bumps in the world.
