Perhaps people should email Waitrose - interest from Sydenham might just make them buy the Syd Rd store rather than another... both the Guardian and Times articles say that they are interested in some shops, not all. I would have thought that Iceland and Netto would not be interested because of Lidl...

Thanks for the article Thomas - very interesting. We shop in Somerfield all the time and noticed that the Sydenham store has improved tremendously over the last few months - I'm not surprised that overall their Christmas takings were up. Given that Morrisons pulled out of Sydenham I don't think they...

Poppy - Rodney is giving Milford a range of ideas - from Wetherspoons through to the smaller independents like Capital (their pubs the Florence in Herne Hill and the Clarence in Balham look fantastic). The Greyhound site is large and will command a high price, and I for one would be delighted if one...

Reading this on hols in Scotland - but not surprised to hear about the fire at the Greyhound. Ten days ago the police were alerted by a neighbour opposite who had seen kids in the car park carrying lighted torches (ie bits of wood alight!) trying to break into the building. I emailed the owners to t...

Congratulations to Richard et al on a splendid website - and thanks for the info about your beautiful estate. One minor point - does the estate have any policy about preserving its Crittal windows? The inappropriate plastic replacements do not have the elegance of the 30s originals - and it is possi...

Also, the 75 bus runs along Mayow Rd (from West Croydon to Lewisham DLR); it's pretty frequent and provides a virtual door-to-door service to Penge East for the more frequent Victoria service. Mayow Road is much improved recently - new paving and road surface, and many of the big Victorian houses ha...

Just as an aside to Poppy's excellent post - there is a very good butcher diagonally opposite the library - called Home Park Butchers they have organic chicken and meat, home-made sausages, calves liver etc, much of which comes from their own farm in Kent. They also have stalls at farmers' markets, ...

There will be more info on the £2m which will hopefully be spent on the high street by TfL at next month's Sydenham Road regeneration meeting -Thursday December 6, 7pm at the Naborhood Centre, next to the post office - all are welcome. Yes, it does follow on from the Living Streets exercise and at t...

We've had excellent food at Montecassino's over the years - as Pocketpip says, the aubergine/tomato/parmesan bake is superb and their cooking of all the classic Italian dishes terrific. As for the wine, I would recommend a gutsy Barolo or Montepulciano - both of which feature on their extensive list.

Fishing rod car thefts in Sydenham
A friend of mine in central Sydenham has just been the victim of a 'fishing rod' car theft - where the perpetrators use a fishing rod or coat hanger to nick your keys from inside your front door. So watch out - thieves about! And if anyone spots a silver A series Mercedes whose reg begins HV02 pleas...

Poppy - architect friends tell me that issues of noise can be a real problem in modern blocks, particularly where there are adjoining party walls. Prospective buyers / tenants should beware of this - and really try to check out what the living conditions will be like, particularly where there are a ...

So sorry to hear that Lee - the only consolation is that there is usually something better round the corner! The same thing happened to us some years ago - the house we eventually bought was much nicer. Surely though prices should be coming down (or at least stabilising) with the current uncertainty...

The Perry Hill is excellent - I must confess to eating half a lobster there in the summer (I never thought I'd get to eat lobster in SE6!) The food is brilliant - the owners previously ran the North Pole in Greenwich (a trail-blazing gastro pub). Very generous portions - and a very comfortable place...
