Re: Freeview reception problems?

While looking through the Argos catalogue, I noticed that most of the aerials have 3G/4G-blocking features. That made me wonder: could phone signals be a possible cause of the loss of picture, especially if someone tends to make calls at a similar time of day?

Re: moving to Sydenham

Hmm, I'm not so sure. I was talking to an estate agent yesterday - admittedly a little farther out than Sydenham - who was telling me that demand is outstripping supply, prices are going up, they are getting multiple offers, sealed bids and what have you, on properties. And they are having to limit ...

Independents' Day UK, 4th July

(Nice pun, which I hadn't initially registered!) Pleased to see this Saturday being designated as a "support independent shops" day of the sort we usually have in early December. Even more pleased to see the News Shopper has a full-page advert promoting Penge and its independent shops. Wondering why...

Re: Freeview reception problems?

Transmission bands in the UK were "cleared out" somewhat starting over two years ago to accommodate 5G. The Freeview bods restructured their bands and decreed that older forms of external aerials were no longer technically suited for the job of receiving the re-organised bands and offered free aeri...

Re: Lockdown Easement: WHO warn the worst is yet to come

Leicester's had a spike (rise) in infections, but it's small, and the Government is right to try and get on top of it with a local lockdown, like has been done in Berlin, parts of Spain, and elsewhere. Depends on your definition of "small", I think. Leicester is a little smaller, population-wise, t...

Re: Freeview reception problems?

alywin, I'm surprised you're still using a ring aerial. My indoor aerial reception problems, especially helicopter disruption also suspected weather effect, stopped when I bought flat panel aerials (for each TV). I mentioned these about a year ago so the price has gone up a bit but still within £10...

Re: Freeview reception problems?

I use a free app called "Find Antenna" for iOS that has a compass-style direction finder that points precisely to transmitters. I am unsure whether there is an Android equivalent. It's excellent at ensuring aerials of all types are aligned accurately to the correct transmitter. Locally I point mine...

Oh, right, thanks. I hadn't seen any notification of that.

Yes, still using the ring aerial.

Re: Freeview reception problems?

It's been really bad again the past few days: surely can't all be the weather? Tonight I had a "no service" message for ages, and I had to watch the ITV news because the BBC one was so garbled. Channel 4 also quite bad.

Re: Consultation on Proposal to Close Silverdale/Bishopsthorpe Road to traffic

Point is to encourage people to walk, how about charging children again for using buses etc. Maybe then buses will be less packed at peak times and it will encourage parents "little angels" to actually walk more. I thought they were already doing that, along with preventing pensioners from travelli...

Re: moving to Sydenham

There ought to be quite a few modern (and not so modern) 2-bed flats within that price range. Certainly there were a while ago, pre-lockdown.

Re: Tax refund scam

HMRC now has a specific email address for you to forward scam emails to so that they can be dealt with, doesn't it? Or is it the government in general?

Re: Local public transport and face coverings

Well, yes, we probably should. I was wrong to use the term "masks", I suppose, but I was getting fed up with typing "face coverings" :) Most people are going to have some sort of scarf, T-shirt, bandana or whatever which they can use to cover their nose, mouth and chin - that was what I meant. BTW, ...

Re: Local public transport and face coverings

None of the double deckers I've been on recently - 185, 176, 197, are charging. 176 and 197 were on the list charging as of last Saturday - although if you got a Boris bus on the 176 route you should have been able to touch in anyway as there are readers at the centre and rear doors. I'm seriously ...

Re: Local public transport and face coverings

Unconfirmed reports this morning (Monday) that TfL have introduce measures to limit the numbers of passengers permitted on a bus at one time to improve separation. They announced it late last week, I think - but I thought the limit was 20 on double-deckers. I saw a 54 in Beckenham at the weekend wi...

Re: Local public transport and face coverings

I guess that must be it. I wonder why anyone thinks it's over? Wait for the infections to start rising again ... And, two days ago, on a 358, I was the only one out of 7 actually wearing a face covering. I haven't got used to checking for more than simply the number of passengers before I get on a b...
