castiron73 - my objections to the proposed development are as I stated previously but to recap and elaborate:- The current buildings are a mess but could be renovated and make an attractive feature on Sydenham Rd. As others have added on the forum, the site is very large and could easily be develope...

The proposed frontage looks nobetter than the 1950's blitz replacements further down the High St - very drab, cheap and nasty. Honestly - would they suggest such low grade design for Beckenham or Dulwich - I don't think so. But of course, this is Sydenham........... Looks aside, as well as the loss ...

Historic buildings under threat

It seems the owners of No 22a and 24 Sydenham Rd have applied for permission to bulldoze the existing buildings and replace them with a four storey block of flats. (For any one who doesn’t know quite where I mean, they’re the buildings just below the former HSBC – one currently trading as a pound sh...

I realise the palace went up in an inferno but it's hard to believe there are so few artifacts left. Is it right that the pile of rubble now on the actual palace site is blitz debris? If so, I'd love to spent the afternoon snooping with a metal detector and spade! W. Wonder (OK, in light of other th...

I might be wrong here - but if Sydenham were to join the underground network, presumably our zone 3 fares would reduce to the cheaper underground zone 3, rather than the current rail/tube combo.

'Overground' will therefore mean staying over-priced - great!

Hi there We've got two cats and use a cat sitter called Lisa. She's absolutely brilliant. Not only does she feed your cats, she stays with for a while, will water your houseplants, and even pick up your post. Whenever we've used her we've always come back to a tidy house and happy cats (and gold fis...

The fact that I could afford to buy in an attractive part of London for starters!

oh, and the High St, the easy journey into central London, my neighbours, the couple who run Fresh and Fruity - all of it really.

Falkor - I love the pictures. I've got all of the current Sydenham books and haven't seen most of these before. I don't suppose you've got any of Venner Rd before all the flats and modern houses were built at the High St end have you?

Aha - someone else trying to teach Roly swear words. After two years of trying I've never heard him squalk even the mildest drat! Good to know I'm not the only one trying.

I really don't believe some of what I am reading here! Do the likes of Knighton not realise that you cannot demolish/build your way to a prosperous high street? They tried that in the 60's and 70's, blighting countless towns and suburbs with hideous redevelopment. Of course, they all seemed a good i...

I had heard of this garden but never visited until this weekend. It is beautiful, and a credit to those who have created and maintain it. The open day was very enjoyable too. To those involved with the garden..... any chance of other events later in the year, such as a plant sale? I'm sure plenty of...

The Two Halves

Arrrrggghhhh - 'The Two Halves' - 'The Too Hideous for Words' more like. It is such a nasty nasty hovel. The staff are utterly rude and the place is a filthy grot hole. I can't believe the brewery have allowed one of their premises to sink so low, especially one in the high st. Surely Sydenham deser...

Sydenham is a great place to live and the commute into town is easy. Forest Hill is nice too. More importantly though, I'd avoid Nunhead like the plague. Before moving to Sydenham I lived near Nunhead (Crofton Park). Nunhead looks nice enough but it has a real problem with gangs of feral kids and cr...

Budgens

Apparently, the former Budgens shop in the High St has been taken over by the woman who runs the flower stall outside. She's opening it under a Londis franchise. (Or something similar. I can't quite recall what she said).

This is great news because she's lovely and at least it's not another nail bar!

I love our High Street

I'm fairly new to Sydenham and have read with interest the various comments critising the state of the High St. To be honest, I don't think some people realise what we've got here. Its great - lots of independent traders and friendly shop keepers, few boring clone stores, and few empty shops. My par...
