High St. development

There's a new application to develop the former blinds shop on the High St lodged with the council. Ref. DC/09/72662/X

It doesn't look too bad, other than a dubious 'meadow' at the back. It's high time that site was sorted out. Anyone else got any thoughts?

Hello Badruz I haven't been into the restaurant since the summer, although the wife and I have been several times since it first opened. The food has always been good, although it does feel like you're sitting in a goldfish bowl with the full extent of the windows unobscured. Any chance of a little ...

Victorians obsessed with progress??

Victorian gothic was just a revival of Medieval gothic and even the Arts & Crafts movement harked back to earlier, pre-industrial times.

As for the development, it looks very nice, just not on that site.

Old sorting office

Not sure if this has already been mentioned on the forum, but it looks like the old sorting office on Silverdale may become a pilates/yoga studio. Lewisham planning ref. DC/09/72523/FT Nice to see old buildings put to new uses - although it should have stayed a sorting office in my opinion, going to...

I'm not sure this is the same one that you posted, I couldn't make it work, but this clip is fascinating, and so so sad.

If you have no other takers, the Evergreen Trust, a recycling charity based in Brixton, collect old furniture for free.

I like Gaz's suggestion, the Sydenham Community Centre, would contract nicely to the punchier, more apt, Syco Centre.

I think it's a great idea, anything to make the High St more attractive should be welcomed. In fact, I'd extend the idea to include most of the used shops, and obscure the grotty window displays and merchandise.

In recognition of those who seem to use the building most (if lurking, drinking and peeing outside could be classed as such) how about Tramp Plaza?

As odd as the current name is, that's the least of this buildings problems.

It's good to hear you're on the case. Fingers crossed they start disappearing. Just out of interest, how long does the enforcement notice give them to act? Also, will it prevent them putting them straight back up?

Thanks

Ulysses You're quite right, my replies were getting unnecessary, and I have amended my last pot. I apologize for any offence caused, I probably took your tone for more than was meant (I do read the Mail, but only on Saturdays). Anyway, my beef with this development is that it's too big for the site ...

Ulysses As amusing as your supercilious response is, albeit Blytonesque, you seem to be making rather a few misguided assumptions. Don't beat yourself up old bean. - Local authority properties Ownership isn't really an issue here, whoever it was took a short-sighted view, like yours, to condemn perf...

Ulysses I think you'll find that PJSON is referring to the newly converted flats at 28 High St that overlook the site, where the residents have jammed the rear patio with so much rubbish that the council have been called, due to rats. As for the state of the existing building, that is due to the neg...

I'm all for the site being tidied up (personally, I'd sooner see the existing building renovated for offices, workshop, retail etc) but the proposed building just looks like a giant caravan with two chemical loos stood at the front. And on that site too, overlooking service yards, a grotty side road...

If the boards are in breach of the T&CP Act (and some have been up for years), they're breaking planning law and should be dealt with by the Lewisham planning office. When I get time, I'll give the council a ring to see what they can do. It's just a pity that local businesses, such as these and ...

With regards to the estate agent boards, as I understand from my brother-in-law, who is one, they are obliged to take them down under planning law. Is the High St in a conservation area? It should be, and if so, maybe the council can also do something about all the ugly satellite dishes that are springing up all over the facades - they're an eyesore.

There was a message on the forum ages ago with a link to the council where you could request more tree planting. I used it a couple of times but they never got back to me - surprise surprise. I think more trees would be great. The issue of the roots affecting ground services could easily be overcome...
