Forest Hill club, Perry Rise

There was also an entrance in Queenswood Road - possibly a 3rd entrance in the northwest, too. Some guys over in the Facebook page are wondering if there's any pics of this around - particularly the swimming pool? I couldn't find any aerial photos as they don't seem to cover this area... is anyone e...

Where was the nearest Tannery?

Did Lewisham or any surrounding parishes have one in historical times? How common were they? When did most die out - 18th, 19th or 20th centuries?

One more pub from those times can be seen in the distance. https://www.flickr.com/photos/stevegrindlay/7386035628 Here's some other weather-boarded cottages from that road that survived till several decades ago: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stevegrindlay/6398831375 https://www.flickr.com/photos/ste...

Re: Sydenham Common in 1841

It was quite built up by the 1840s since the enclosure, so could be anywhere: Honor Oak Road (stone built houses), otherwise elsewhere would be weather-boarded: most likely Kirkdale AKA Old Sydenham High Street AKA Sydenham Common (the name of the open space had evidently passed to the road). Had th...

Survival rate of local businesses after the War?

How much % of local businesses/shops were affected by the War? Were they often able to re-open and resume business at the same rebuilt/intact location? Or was there a whole new wave of businesses that replaced former ones? In other words, how does the last pre-war directory of Sydenham compare to th...

Presumably you already checked out this topic? There's a few extra pics, including of the dairy. http://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4327 I can't add anything else. Not sure what the Sydenham Neighbourhood depot? (not visited the area lately) I thought that photo was looking towards Sydenha...

A very warm welcome, John! :) Would be most grateful to see any photos/scans of that house since our coverage of Sydenham Hill currently stands at 58% and doesn't include any views of Moss Grange:

Unfortunately, I have no idea what happened to Mr. Morgan. He was a very nice guy and I sometimes wonder what became of him myself... Christianity, among other things, seemed to bring out the good in him and a lot of other staff working at that Church of England school. However, once you get into th...

Framework for Local History - Daily Life in London and SE

The coming of the railways seems to be the single major turning point in the history of English towns and villages, so I have divided a timeline of important events between the "Old World" and the "New World" based around the Early Victorian period. If you have any additions/corr...

Re: The Origin Of Sydenham Hill

I've been thinking about Sydenham Hill/Dulwich Woods lately, which were part of the Great North Wood, and studying several maps. Other than public footpaths it seems there was no easy way for traffic to pass through the woods other than to go around them via the Green Man, Lordship Lane (in the nort...
