Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

There was indeed an urban district of Catford... and while London County Council may well have purchased the land from the Urban District the covenant would still apply. The records are held by Lewisham. Not according to the National Archives, or according to the Lewisham Archives catalogue - I che...

Re: Sydenham Tyres

Yes... they've always been a problem, but it's gotten much, much worse, and the council just turn a blind eye. They fly tip so regularly that even if you use fix my street or whatever, by the next day they'll have chucked more rubbish out on the pavement. The street signs for Larkbere Road have bee...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

Just returned from the park. It was so busy we had to queue for the car park for ten minutes. There were no special events on. Just people using the park. Are there car park charges? Nothing on the web site about it https://lewisham.gov.uk/inmyarea/openspaces/parks/beckenham-place-park/features-of-...

Re: New aldi

Thanks for the warning Stuart. This area is a bit of a question mark area. Depending on which map you look at it is either SE26 or SE6. Pets at Home has an address in SE26... This seems logical. When this was a bit of open scrub it may well have been lumped in with SE6... but once it started to be b...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

I was also in the park yesterday. I’d say there were more people than usual who were not dog walkers - dog walkers bring the vast majority of users up until now. Was it busy? No? Was it pissing with rain? Yes. It was not raining when I was there but the absence of the free ducking pond and the weat...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

Yesterday I visited the almost abandoned park. The temporary fencing is close to the edges of the lake but blocks one part of the path around it. A number of portacabins have sprung up with the name of an event organiser on them, including a collection alongside the lake. Notices tell us the "lake i...

No. It is in SE26. The Google maps entry has the "2" missing.

Re: Forest Hill Pools

Well it is marginally better than a plastic lined puddle providing death trap circumstances and entirely unsupervised. Lewisham should hang its head in shame. It once boasted an Olympic sized swimming pool. The problem is that swimming pools are subject to strict regulations and Lewisham thought it ...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

Yes John - you were right. Kudos. The danger you were in was, as Holaquease states, some of us tend to imagine you over egg things a bit. Which means when you hit the nail on the head we don't always see it. Seperating fact from opinion a little more might have made people take more notice. Just sa...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

I also feel somewhat sorry for TPT Coaching, who were contracted to run the swimming and water sports. They are a very small local company and seemed overwhelmed by the task of running the bookings - their website was a homemade GoDaddy site that was a real shambles. And now it appears to be broken...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

I think the problems arise as the swimming pond was opened before it was properly finished and has coincided with a heatwave. At other swimming ponds in London you have to go through a gate and there are restrictions in who can swim. Maybe they should have had a separate paddling pool for toddlers ...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

Perhaps now some of the sneerers and jeerers will apologise for their abusive response to my original point. I am proved right. The half hearted changes will not resolve the safety issues. There MUST be buoyancy aids at 50 yard intervals around the lake. There MUST be lifeguards position in elevate...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

It seems to me the problem is this is a new body of water in a public park and people are assuming it has designed to be completely safe for children and that they don’t need to take the same amount of care that they would in bodies of water not purpose designed for swimming. Personally I think the...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

Where i was brought up there were small farm reservoirs - very difficult to clamber out of - and some river pools that on certain days were shockingly cold and could catch out the unwary. There were fatalities and it is wise to be wary. Appropriate safety equipment and lifeguards where possible are...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

In case you can’t access the link: Beckenham Place Park roped off lake splash zone, be extra careful! We went to the lake today and it was a lovely vibe BUT... My 10yo got out of his depth and panicked in the splash zone and my husband had to stage a dramatic (and thankfully timely) rescue. The web...

Any drownings yet at the drowning lake.?
No.
It's not living up to the hype is it?
Early days yet. There will be.

Then what will the sneering classes find to peer down their noses at?

I've heard it all now. Maybe you should retitle this thread 'The Burning Place'. It's interesting to trace the trajectory of your posts in this thread John, moving through complaints about parking, the aesthetic appearance of the building, that a yoga studio isn't a 'proper shop', some odd query ab...

Re: The Drowning Place - Beckenham Place Park

Just had a look on the link and I am surprised there are no life preserver rings. Though I imagine, after a few months you will begin to notice litter, cigarette ends, plastic bottles and other rubbish dumped in there. I bet if you give it a year, you will find a supermarket trolley or an old fridg...
