Re: The Monstrosity - ie St Philp Neri school building

I’m still a bit confused. The building, ugly as it is, is exactly as billed in the original planning isn’t it? There was a public meeting I recall where they showed the plans. The rejected application was to turn building 2 into plastic cladding rather than timber outer, wasn’t it? I’m sympathetic, ...

Re: New council houses

I hope this doesn’t get mired in the usual planning gripes. Everyone is entitled to their preferences, but there are 1900 families listed as homeless in the borough, which has to come first. Let’s get behind the council.

Re: Bell Green Gas Holders - Proposal to Demolish in April 2

Well many may ask that Alwyn. But the Sydenham Society has found experts who know how to build inside the gasholders, without dismantling them, or disturbing the underlying soil, or upsetting the birdlife, and without needing to charge Kings Cross prices. Some may be sceptical but if it can be done ...

Re: Bell Green Gas Holders - Proposal to Demolish in April 2

In that case - if it can indeed be done - I'm 100% in favour. Some landmark architecture and high density housing would do the area a lot of good.

Re: Bell Green Gas Holders - Proposal to Demolish in April 2

I read that the position now is that demolishing the gasholders would interfere with the Peregrine falcon and thereby be a criminal offence; but also that the gasholders should be used for residential.

But won’t building houses inside the gasholders interfere with the falcon?

Re: sticky:Mural?

I dearly hope it goes ahead. Keep at it. Shame this wasn’t thought through when they put the CA in force. Conservation areas are fine for suburbs (up to a point) but if you apply them to a busy high street which needs to continually evolve, refresh and grow then they are a recipe for stagnation and ...

Re: Sydenham Society

Interesting poll though. Wonder what the figures would be in Sydenham. Quite high, I reckon.

Re: Sydenham Society

Thank you for the update Robin. That’s interesting to hear!

Id be interested to know if there was any discussion of the main complaint of forum users ie that the Syd Soc should be open and transparent about which planning processes it plans to intervene in, especially private dwellings.

Re: Bell Green Gas Holders - Proposal to Demolish in April 2

I guess like so many planning disputes it’s not really about the gasholders at all.

It’s about control, who “runs” the area, and who needs to be “consulted” and give their approval before anything changes.

Re: Planning News

One option open to everyone is to tell the council that you could support such height/density in principle but only if they deliver as billed the materials/parking/greenery etc. They often build in such conditions in the permissions to prevent any rollback to cheaper materials later on. Tactically i...

The design and access statement gives a sample of the materials proposed on this development, and some examples of the look they want, in the "design and access" statement here: http://planning.lewisham.gov.uk/online-applications/files/2B346BB947357F173DF6ABF87E1E8E06/pdf/DC_17_102792-DESIGN_AND_ACC...

Re: Planning News

Thanks for flagging I’ll be emailing in to support. According to the design statement, the gas holders are ten storeys so they’ll blend in well and stop the ironwork being quite so out of keeping with the visual amenity. More importantly, more homes for more people to enjoy our neighbourhood, which ...

Re: Bell Green Gas Holders - Proposal to Demolish in April 2

Also: those gas holders must be eight storeys tall. Imagine the reaction if you tried to build to that height now! They’d “loom over in an unneighbourly fashion” and “spoil the visual amenity”. They’d certainly be deemed “out of keeping”.1 It’s one rule for storing gas, another for housing humans...

Re: Bell Green Gas Holders - Proposal to Demolish in April 2

Also: if the councillor would like to stop referring to how the gasholders "survived Luftwaffe bombers" that would be welcome. It's the sort of irrelevant absurdity that gives these conservation campaigns a bad name.

Re: Bell Green Gas Holders - Proposal to Demolish in April 2

Problem with the Save the Gasholders campaign was it never got straight what they were being saved for, or how, or who would pay for it. I remember some stuff about cutting-edge apartments being hung from inside the iron frames? I'm sure a lot of people could have got behind a defined and budgeted p...

Re: Robin Orton You raise a good point there about local feeling. Very topical (national) debate at the moment about what respecting the 'will of the people' actually means in a representative parliamentary democracy. If local feeling was always followed by our government (local or national) then t...

I dont know. Just a random example from minutes, on the council website (i dont really want to link to it out of respect for the people involved). Sydenham needs protecting from the poor taste of its inhabitants, I guess.

Re: Sydenham Society

Here's the issue. It's not just about the society vs "greedy developers" coming in here to make some cash. Imagine if you wanted to build a modest kitchen extension and you were told, on the public record, that a civic society - representing 1000 of your neighbours - thought your plans were "unneigh...
