Re: What Would you do?

Well I recently carried out an electrical installations job in an old house in Surrey. I could be in full concentration on what I was doing when suddenly a streaky-flash would catch my eyes. Before I could turn my head to focus fully it had gone as fast as it came. Probably the EDF boys changing th...

Greg The station/pub you mentioned are Penge East and and the Hollywood East respectively. Lynnmurr was describing Penge West and The Bridge House Tavern. Both pubs are pretty average builders' watering holes; I sometimes pop in the BHT after work but not often recently as it's taken [another] nosed...

The technology is around (has been for some years now) for all these sets of traffic signals to 'talk' to each other and optimise the flows of traffic and pedestrian cycles. The money spent on the road at Cobbs Corner might have paid for one of these systems as an upgrade to the existing signalled j...

Illuminance, what do you know of the church at the bottom of Trewsbury Road that's been bombed but quite sympathetically restored (IMO)? Erm, I have absolutely no idea!! Need to pop down that end of Sydenham this week sometime so will make a point of looking. Talking of time, I don't think I'll be ...

The easiest tip to get to is Churchfield Road in Penge.

Similar to Simons reply, it's not in Lewisham so you'll have to pay a few quid but it's probably cheaper than the fuel spent driving to New Cross in weekday traffic.

Worcester Bosch are pretty good too :) If you have DHW but no CH I would guess, depending on the system (eg S-plan, Y-plan etc) it could be the motor on your valve has died. May also be the room thermostat or field wiring (external to the boiler). Probably more expense I'm afraid but it's not always...

Thanks guys and gals for a fantastic walkabout this afternoon, I learned a lot about the top of Sydenham, especially Wells Park and the springs. Thank you also for putting up with my incessant coughing (bl**dy man flu)- I promise to be healthier next time. Waiting for the secret pictures to be poste...

British Library Resources

If you haven't already discovered this site, take a look. http://www.collectbritain.co.uk/ If you type 'Sydenham' into the search box, a wealth of photos, books and newspaper cuttings appear. There's a load of Delamotte photos of the Crystal Palace and the Terraces being built, most of which I have ...

Town History?

Admin

As it seems a few of us have found a common interest in our local history, would it be worthwhile to create a new section in the forum?

Just a thought :)

Thanks Steve and Pat for your contributions. Whilst searching for Joseph Fogerty and Edward van Vliet I stumbled across the British Library website and have found a goldmine of information for the whole area. Although not strictly on the topic of this thread, I found this newspaper article about the...

Lawrie Park Road Development

Maybe Steve G, Pat or Falkor can help here... Does anyone know of the contractor who built the substantial row of villas along Lawrie Park Road? From old maps I think the original development stretched from 9 (present day access road to Bays Close) to just past St Christphers Hospice. Used to live i...

Any chance we can put future messages on another thread? My cat says this page takes a long time to load on moggy-broadband and he has trouble clicking his mouse, what with not having an opposable thumb and all that.

Exellent photos by the way :D

Absolutely flippin marvellous.

Sorry for letting you down, I was under the impression - via a PM - that the event had been rained off.

I had been looking forward to it all week.

Just puts the icing on the cake to a thouroughly horrible weekend.

Regards

Illuminance (usually 'E' in formulas) is the total amount of visible light illuminating (incident upon) a point on a surface from all directions above the surface. This "surface" can be a physical surface or an imaginary plane. Therefore illuminance is equivalent to irradiance weighted wit...

To add: It's good practice to keep at least one radiator on the standard valves, typically bathroom or hallway ones. Known as a 'heat leak', it gives the hot water somewhere to go -ie: away from the boiler, prolonging the life of the burners/heat exchanger. Also, do not use a TRV in conjunction with...

Creepy isn't? Looks like something from an 80's horror film. If you look at Stanfords Map of London 1862 it's not there. Judging by the architecture and elevation Crofton Lodge does look like it was the first property to be built along that part of Venner Road, sometime after 1862. It is mentioned i...
