Blank video cassettes?
I was just wondering whether anyone had spotted any blank video cassettes on sale in Sydenham, perhaps in one of those "household goods" shops? Otherwise I shall have to make a trip to Croydon.

Ooh, thanks for that. Would hate to lose touch with her (yes, that's another recommendation!)

Loud PA system
Can anyone else hear a loud PA system at the moment? Judging by the wind direction, I'd guess it's coming from the north side of the railway line(s), but I can't pinpoint it. It's annoying me, as I'm trying to work. Crystal Palace? Midweek? St. Christopher's? (ditto) BTW, has anyone seen anything ab...

Recommendations for guttering, maybe pointing
The guy who I usually get to do my home maintenance is currently unable to climb high ladders, so I'm looking for someone who can do guttering well, and possibly pointing and other external work. Can anyone recommend anybody, please?

Re: Fire Brigade fitting free smoke alarms
Yes, probably . And no, not *that* sort of uniform. And one of them was female, anyway.
And they had ID when I asked for it.

Fire Brigade fitting free smoke alarms
Had an unannounced visit from the London Fire Brigade earlier this week, checking whether people had smoke alarms fitted, and offering to fit one free if there wasn't one. Very useful, since it was something we hadn't yet got around to doing. Don't know how many people they'll catch in with a daytim...
Re: Bonfires
Now, that could be more of a problem. I'm not sure it's legal to disturb/destroy active birds' nests. A few years ago, I had a robin which found its way into my garden shed through a knot-hole where the knot had fallen out, and had built a nest. I was told there was nothing I could do about it: I'd ...

I hadn't realised it was that new. The seating was certainly being used mid-morning on Friday when I went up to town.

Re: 10 Jobs available at the new Dixon/PC World
A new Dixon/PC World in Sydenham? Sounds a bit weird to me, especially given that there's one just up the road in Catford. Where's it going to be?

Re: VENNER ROAD/HIGH STREET
I agree in principle, but people would be reluctant to walk down the high street with a watering can to water the trees. I am sure residents of a road would water "their" trees if they were politely asked to do so. People are hesitant about unilaterally taking ownership of what is a publi...

Re: Gorgeous new garden centre in Parish Lane
And now they're having a Christmas Market this weekend: http://www.alexandracottages.co.uk/archives/1509 I hope the weather's kind to them. Oh, and I also ought to mention that we visited and tried the homemade cakes a few weeks ago, and very good they were too :). I think they're serving hot soup d...

Re: London Bridge Station Redevelopment
The implication was just during the works, I think. But this is going to be horrid for me: I now have only one train I can get back to close to home from Charing Cross - all the others involve starting from London Bridge. But if I can't change at London Bridge, what am I supposed to do? Is Boris goi...

Re: Freeview reception problems last night?
Was it raining at the time? I find bad weather can have a negative effect on the signal strength for some channels. It was, although not excessively, so I didn't think that had anything to do with it, but perhaps you're right. It was just a bit worrying, since it's really hard getting hold of digib...

Freeview reception problems last night?
Just wondering whether anyone else suffered problems receiving Freeview yesterday (Wednesday) evening? I was watching TV at about 9.50 when the picture started breaking up, the sound started going a bit funny and then the screen went blank and I couldn't get anything back. Turned off, and everything...

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
The northern end of Lawrie Park Road is now closed for an estimated two weeks. Traffic, including 176 &197 buses are being diverted via Lawrie Park Gardens & Lawrie Park Avenue rather than the usual diversion of straight up Crystal Palace Park Road. Is this related to the roundabout works, ...

Re: ,street lighting
Thanks for the warning. I hope it doesn't come anywhere near our part of Sydenham - we already get too much light into the front of the house from streetlamps. As for the effect on the local flora and fauna, my downstairs neighbour has installed those solar-powered lights in her garden, and they are...
