Milk Machines

Hi I just wondered if anyone remembers using these old milk vending machines, which used to occupy many street corners up until the 1970's http://www.coldal.org/images/remember/milk.jpg They contained ice cold half pint tetrapaks of milk, and also that great staple of summer, the 'Jubbly' http://3.b...

I've been checking some new maps of the Canal, supplied by Steve... I reckon there was a small mooring/wharf directly south of the swing bridge at the Dartmouth Arms..perhaps just long enough for 2 or 3 narrowboats, roughly where the pub Yard is...perhaps the recently exposed bank constituted part o...

does anyone know of any photos of Lawrie Park Avenue or the Sydenham gate, contemporary with this railway? ..also, were there any balloon pictures, or wide view panoramas taken of the palace grounds at that time... ...perhaps some photo enhancement might reveal the station or other structure in the ...

speculation (however fanciful) + hard evidence =working theory. I think all the evidence points to some version of Steve's route. ....and as much as I try, I cant see more than one station....at the Sydenham end....I do think the cutting is part of the trench that contained the tunnel...probably dug...

(I'd just like to add that We couldn't have got as far with the canal research without the work done already on 'London Canals', so thank YOU, Roger)

I've been checking things out. I personally now believe there may only have` been 1 station, and it was where the cutting is., adjacent to the engine house, as shown in the engraving....also, he carriage is described as being blown and sucked, implying power at 1 end only. theres only 1 engine and e...

...in fact, that would put the north end up near`the gate at Chulsa rd, and certainly agrees with the positioning of the lower engine house and the suction basin. amended from Steve's route.. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2390/2448790805_14f984dfa0_o.jpg in which case, this would be the site of the...

I totally agree...push/pull, its all the same.. the`power plant is, however , visible in the engravings, unless there was another one the same at the penge end, which is at least a possibility. I know most atmospheric railways have a pump at both ends, as did the Forest Hill - Norwood atmosphe...

I'm pretty sure both images are of the sydenham gate station. There would be no need for a turntable. As far as I can tell, the whole train had to be inside the tunnel for the pneumatics to take effect, so would have been pulled into the tunnel at both ends until the seal was complete. If the images...

I dont think there was a turntable.
the fact that the collar is at one end is of little importance, the pressure would take effect as soon as the collar end entered the chamber.
..and 35 ft is pretty short.

I think momentum and gradient could explain why it wasnt such a problem.
also, the collar must have been flexable, and the carriage was only short.

it certainly was like an assault course,
I think it did stretch into that area at some point, because it took up quite a lot of that side of the path.
that excavation report would be useful.

hi Steve, yep. I reckon you're pretty close there. I did consider the sydenham gate station being in the hilly area by the gate house...it does make sense, from those pictures. here's a rough overlay; http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2344/2428593094_a0d818a5b4_o.jpg ...it seems as if the cutting is fu...

..This is becoming very interesting. I just wanted to suggest an alternative. imagine the station at Sydenham gate being in a cutting, with the tunnel entering the raised ground adjacent to the road...then following a course similar to that marked in blue here; http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3140/24...
