Re: Railway Problems - Lines Closed

From southern: On Monday a large hole developed below the track in the Forest Hill area (between East Croydon and London Bridge). Assessments and plans were made to repair and fill the hole with additional ballast material that supports the track and work on this repair has continued overnight. We a...

Railway Problems - Lines Closed

There is a sinkhole opened under Forest Hill station (!) so according to Southern / London Overground there is complete shutdown between London Bridge to East Croydon. Apparently maintenance staff are looking into it (the hole?). Looks likely to be for remainder of day. Not sure what situation is fo...

Re: Station approach - new toilet

Maybe the "toilet listening post" has been installed by the Dowd brothers. It may be sensible when going past to say that Purelake is a very fine public spirited building company and that JD is peerless as an MP. You never know who is listening...... :D

Re: Station approach - new toilet

Oh - I've got it. The Sydenham public convenience does look rather similar to the East German Stasi listening outposts badly camoflauged as an everyday object. It isn't really a toilet. Its got microphones inside and it eavedrops on commuters.

Re: Station approach - new toilet

It occurs to me that Forest Hill, Honor Oak and probably pretty much every other station does not have a public convenience outside the station. Any particular reason why Sydenham is so favored - local history buffs may help. Given that the said convenience in Sydenham has not been open for last cou...

Re: Lewisham and West Penge candidates

I suspect we will see a Grand Bargain between Conservatives and SNP. Devo max in Scotland for an agreement that Scots do not vote for English laws. Locks labour out full stop. To be honest the only party that can now defeat the Conservatives is the Conservatives. Think the 1992 election which they w...

Re: Southern services to/from London Bridge

Just seen from se 23 forum that it looks like no trains / Overground beyond New Cross Gate on 4 out of 5 next weekends, starting this weekend. Be sure to go the station on March 14/15th to remind yourself what a train on a weekend looks like!

Re: Southern services to/from London Bridge

A good day to wfh. From the Southern site: "Delays between Sydenham and London Bridge / Canada Water until at least 08:30 A signalling problem near New Cross Gate means journeys are being delayed by up to 20 minutes between Sydenham and London Bridge / Canada Water. London Overground services b...

Re: Southern services to/from London Bridge

2 things that would be worth trying: a) shut down New Cross on the Overground for peak (and perhaps all day) to get the extra OG trains to Crystal Palace (as between Christmas / New Year). Admittedly there is still the challenge to get to Canada Water b) add frequency to the Blackfriars / Crofton Pa...

Re: Overground - first five carriage train arrives!

At Canada Water, If you are in the 4th (soon to be 5th) carriage I use the up escalator going to the ticket office, then take the escalator down to the Jubilee. Its quicker and less crowded than the interchange which will be even busier as the 5 cars trains roll-out. And the Overground will be yet b...

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

The recent Syd website is depressing re the Greyhound - looks rather bleak if true. "Bad News! Nothing is going to happen soon. The commercial head lease owner is refusing to sign the necessary Deed of Variation because they are reported to become liable for the rent with no confidence that the...

Does this really mean no trains at all into either London Bridge or Canada Water all day Saturday and Sunday? That would be appalling.

Re: London Bridge goes offline this Friday/Monday

Not that good sadly. Southern advise Platform 11 is closed for rest of day and there are several train cancellations, and looks like the 06/36 trains from Lon Bridge to West Croyden are cancelled through the evening peak. Apparently the Overground is running additional train/s to West Croydon though...

Re: House prices Feb 2014

Go down to Honor Oak and 2 bed Edwardian terrace £500k, 3-bed £600k. I suspect prices will carry on rising for a while yet given the huge demand in London. There will be a bursting of the bubble ato some point (perhaps when interest rates start increasing?) but not for some time ahead yet. The other...

Re: Online petition to save the Windmill

I drank in the Windmill when it was a Wetherspoons and over the years had an occassional pint after squash (a puff for Sydenham Tennis Club in Lawrie Park Rd). My favourite pub - no..but I lean to once you lose a pub, you lose a pub. If a pub remains it can evolve. So I would prefer to see it stay o...

Re: New street lights

In Grierson Road (close to HOP station) Skanska have installed proper light shields so light does not shine into the houses - sensible as its Edwardian terrace with very small front gardens. In fact I am rather puzzled why these shields have not been installed more consistently. The lightposts with ...
