Wonderful picture Falkor - thanks for finding it and putting it on the site. I wonder what the significant info you were told is... Kenny - I think Hornimans changed hands in the early 90s. It's now a very good Italian restaurant called That's Amore where the landlord often serenades diners with Ita...

In 1990 the Sydenham Society put forward a plan to the Council for the creation of an Upper Sydenham Conservation Area which would include the stretch of Kirkdale from Jews Walk to Halifax Street (among others) taking in the Fox and Hounds and High Street Buildings - the glorious Baroque edifice whi...

Hi Lee - some of what you're asking for in the post above exists in Sydenham - but as the area is a bit spread out the shops can be some way from each other... for instance Home Park Butchers has organic meat (friends say as good as the E Dulwich butcher but as I've not been there I can't say); they...

Those are fantastic ideas Lee - why don't you contact the town centre manager, Julie Sutch - her email address is: julie.sutch@lewisham.gov.uk and she is based at Sydenham library. She would be able to tell you who owns the old chemists shop.

How about 'Cafe Hero' - shameless rip-off of my fave chain... and appropriate for everyone who struggles on to the trains first thing in the morning! My favourite coffee(s) are Cappucino and Latte (depends on the time of day); crossaints and home-made cakes; fresh soups for on the way home... I coul...

Welcome back Greg - good to see you are still in circulation! Re the Greyhound - in my opinion its refurbishment is key to the regeneration of Sydenham as it forms an essential piece of the jigsaw of the proposed Sydenham Gateway. The pub has obviously got into a terrible state as a result of indiff...

A petition to save the Greyhound, supporting the retention of a well-managed pub and a 'sensitive' development in the car park has now been started by the Sydenham Society. You can sign it at the Kirkdale Bookshop, opposite the pub.

Hope they deliver them to the Thorpes - I'd love a bin for garden waste! (My compost-making always seems to end up as a pile of rather sad twigs!)

Dear jfl - you have done a great job with 2-12 Station Approach - the building now looks very smart after years of neglect. As an aside it had an interesting period in the early 80s when it was the Windsors nightclub -does anyone else remember this? A cafe / deli in the shop units would be the ideal...

Falkor - thanks so much for putting up these cuttings about Halifax Street -it's astonishing to realise that the street was scheduled for demolition in the late 50s and that the Manchester Guardian of 1957 included Sydenham in one of its leader articles. When you look at Halifax Street now and see h...

Sounds like great news - the building is very attractive in a 30s roadhouse kind of way... (it's possibly the same era as the Dolphin, which has been described as '30s Tudor'); it's redbrick with a tiled roof, pretty wooden windows, two big bays at the front - its set back from the road and has a ge...

Great idea to use those premises - you could not really get any close to the station which must be the most important consideration for anyone starting this kind of business. Getting the most out of maps

Just to let everyone on Sydenham Town know that the British Library is holding a series of workshops in February on maps, and how to use them in research. The workshops are part of their programme supporting the exhibition entitled London: a Life in Maps, which runs until March 4. Each workshop focu...

For some reason in the photo from the 60s the road layout looks much calmer and more spacious - I don't think this is simply down to there being less traffic. The 2 small islands (the one in the foreground having a 'pear drop' shape) with their connecting zebra crossings give more possiblilities for...
