Re: Poodle club

I too have had a great couple of evenings at the Poodle Club- including last Friday which was rounded off by bopping to one of the best dance playlists I've ever heard. I was also a regular at Beer Rebellion which I loved, and attended most of the meetings about a community takeover. I am not an &qu...

Nigel wrote: No problem with their pasties , I decided not to engage with Nigel and his more outrageous views on these fora, but his remark about the Cake Store's pasties cannot go unchallenged. Re: STILL NO SYDENHAM CHRISTMAS TREE OR LIGHTS?!

Yet another year of unimpressive lights in the High Street and a sprig for a Christmas tree. Who will take responsibility for this? Why does this keep happening and how can this be changed? I drove down the High Street a couple of nights ago at about 01:00h and I thought it looked rather pretty. The...

Knighton Motors by the car wash on the High Street. Had our cars serviced there for years. Great service.

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Interesting that he makes a comparison with a Fullers pub and not one of his own. "Dog friendly" is encouraging. Just as long as they serve their beer in manly pint glasses and not those horrible "schooners"!

Re: What has Jim done

Yes, the of course streets are noticeably cleaner in Depford and Honor Oak, and especially in Forest Hill, represented in parliament by, er......Jim Dowd. I'll try and keep it simple too. I asked for examples of investment in other parts of the borough thst you claim have been favoured over Sydenham...

Re: The Alexandra

On the other hand, and to be fair, the staff were agreeable and the music was good and not so loud that it was impossible to have a conversation. The fit-out is interesting and the use of the space is imaginative. Just an overwhelming feeling that I was being ripped off.

The Alexandra

Went there last night. Beer served in girly glasses in 2/3 pint measures. About 10 pence cheaper than a pint anywhere else. Great scam- sell a third less beer for about 10p less per measure! And what the **** are "rest rooms"?! The Soiuthy Street tap room, on the other hand, was great.

Re: What has Jim done

Well maybe it will be great to have a new MP. It seems every other part of Lewisham have seen some serious investment and improvements in the past 20 years while Sydenham has stood still at best. We cant even keep the main high street supermarket open. I wonder if it will be a massive charity shop ...

Re: High Street banners

The contract was to replace all the lanterns. The columns in Princethorpe were to be retained as they were in better condition than those in the other streets. I'm not a great fan of the new "Dickens by Disney" lamps myself, but they do give better light and in Princethorpe there are some ...

Re: High Street banners

Don't bank on it. They failed to complete the Lightning scheme in the Thorpes, then claimed that they had replaced all the old lights when they hadn't until confronted with photographic evidence to the contrary, then promised to complete the outstanding works by Christmas, failed, promised to do it ...

Re: Baxters Field

Absolutely agree. I lived just around the corner from Baxter's Field when the kids were young and used it a lot. It's a recreation ground, not some poncey garden for the delight of local tree-huggers. Priority should be for a set of goal posts, maybe an activity trail like the one in Mayow Park, zip...

Tennis courts in Mayow Park

It looks like the new tennis courts in Mayow Park will be pay to play, as persistent roumours have suggested. The gate has been fitted with an electronic key pad lock. The old courts were tatty but they were free, and gave local kids the opportunity to have a knock-about and sometime an illegal game...

Re: Namaste site looking hideous!

And I'd also want to say that the outsourcing forced on local authorities results in a lot of our civic amenities ending up in the hands of firms like Skankia. Like the banners on the High Street and lighting. In the case of the incomplete lighting scheme in the Thorpes, local councillors have been ...

Re: Namaste site looking hideous!

The fact is that the nicer and CLEANER our high street looks, the more it'll attract new businesses that care about our High Street and their customers This is not a fact. It is an opinion. Where is your evidence? I've lived in several areas of London which have gentrified. They were all scruffy du...

Re: Namaste site looking hideous!

The argument that Forest Hill (or Crystal Palace or east Dulwich) is doing " better" than Sydenham seems to be about coffee shops, bars and restaurants and the odd deli or organic butcher. Gentrification in other words. Personally, I think the High Street in Sydenham, with its greater rang...

Re: Namaste site looking hideous!

Perhaps someone can explain why Forest Hill is so bloody marvellous and Sydenham is so crap when both are within the borough of Lewisham? The fact is that local councils have very little power to shape the sort of high street that people want. Local authorities can't force shops to open or prevent t...

He'll serve 6 years in custody and 9 years on licence- half the sentence on licence as is always the case with determinate sentences and the additional 3 years licence imposed by the judge. Re: Budgens

Such a shame, both for the staff concerned, who have effectively been shafted by the "caring sharing" Coop when they flogged it off to a bunch of spivs. And also Sydenham generally. I can't see any other major retailer taking it on. I guess the most likely option is that it will remain emp...
