The original post was from 2009. And Alwisms, you appear to live in Canada?

Re: Save Beer Rebellion - we need your help!

There are other places that are better for businesses, but Sydenham doesn't have many cheap, available properties, which is actually holding it back. That just doesn't match what I see at all. Whenever I see commercial properties being advertised for sale or for rent on Sydenham's high street, I'm ...

Re: Squatters?

Sigh... whatever you think of squatters, whether or not they happen to be East European has nothing to do with it.
Whether your neighbours are annoying or whether they're a joy to live next to, their nationality or race is irrelevant.

Re: Save Beer Rebellion - we need your help!

It's better than an empty space. But there is something a bit shitty in attending meetings about turning the place into a community bar, and at those meetings receiving all the info about the costs and overheads and essentials about the running of the bar, and listening to all the ideas of others th...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

I don't think there's any shortage of local businesses and entrepreneurs for whom Sydenham is an exciting bet on paper.. A great location with a lot of thoroughfare, and relatively cheap shop rents for Zone 3. What they need is to be shown that somebody cares, and that their investment is a gamble ...

Re: RUMOURS: CINEMA AND NANDOS COMING TO SYDENHAM

Unlike the Nandos developments, which clearly have some substance behind them, I still haven't heard anyone provide any sources whatsoever for this rumour of a cinema. What started this rumour? Isn't it just wishful thinking?

Re: 20 mph speed limits

I always try to stick to 20 going down the hill from Crystal Palace, but I've frequently been somewhere between 20 and 30mph as I've gone past the cameras. And I've yet to receive a ticket. So either the cameras aren't on, or there are simply not set to photograph 20mph, as there's almost always som...

Always surprised that any vaping shop has enough turnover to generate enough rent for a high-street unit.

Re: RUMOURS: CINEMA AND NANDOS COMING TO SYDENHAM

I posted a comment in support of the planning application linked to above on the planning applications site. I'd urge others to do the same. Confusingly, you had to select one of only three options to describe yourself in commenting: 'Applicant', 'Developer' or 'Complainant'. Obviously I'm not an ap...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

"No issues with the jumble trail idea per se, but if you get a single participant on the local estates I'd be very surprised." That wasn't the case with the Penge jumble trail - there was a massive number of participants of all backgrounds. Lots of blocks of flats taking part using communa...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

Feel obliged to speak up in defence of Calabash of Culture! I'm not a vegan but I think its food is very good. Reminds me a lot of the much-missed institution Food For Thought in Covent Garden. Yes, perhaps a quid or two overpriced, but it appears to be getting busier and busier at lunchtimes when I...

Re: Best internet provider in sydenham?

My problem with Virgin is very very simple: we completely lose internet access far too often. When we lose access, we lose access for a whole day or whole night. I work from home, so it's unacceptable. I used to quite like the excuse to take my laptop to a cafe or pub with WiFi for a bit, but it now...

Lovely bit of old pub signage uncovered in Lower Sydenham

Just noticed as I drove past, that building work on a shop unit on a corner has uncovered a nice old pub sign advertising "Charringtons" (I think it was) ales. Shame it won't be a pub again! Think it's going to be residential if memory serves.

Re: Save Beer Rebellion - we need your help!

Seems like the campaign has died a death. I emailed the guy running it to ask, but never got a reply – and I'm someone who expressed interest in investing. Shame, as it really wouldn't have taken much.

Re: Best internet provider in sydenham?

Hi All Any recommendations for the best internet provider in the area? Currently with virgin, but the service craps out on the regular and the traffic is too high on weekend evenings so hardly any signal at all. All advice gratefully received! Need something with some oomph as we are big on streami...

Re: Parking problems

Controversially... I can't say it really bothers me. I live on one of the supposedly problematic roads and it's not a huge deal. 9 times out of 10 I can park somewhere on my road. Yes, parking spaces fill up super-quickly: it's rare that a space is vacant for long, so I can rarely park directly outs...

Good for you. The Penge jumble trail was a lot of fun last year - felt like a genuinely festive social occasion. (And I also picked up a few bargain paperback books I'd been meaning to read for ages) Met a lot of locals I now chat to regularly

Re: RUMOURS: CINEMA AND NANDOS COMING TO SYDENHAM

I would not like to be young here myself. I'd be happy to be young anywhere! :) But I see quite a few young people in Sydenham, Penge and Forest Hill. Young in the sense of 20somethings and school-age teenagers. Sure, there's no nightlife to speak of, but the Orange line makes it very easy to get t...
