That Southern Style ...
In the words of a contractor I was just talking to in the ticket hall newsagents, they had a bit of a riot this morning, so one Southern manager having said to close the platform 1 gate, another said later to open it. He suggested it was part of a strategy of getting passengers used to the idea of t...

Stepping up the campaign
If the gate is now open, I wonder if Southern have seen sense ... time to go round and ask / see what's going on. From an email I just got from someone awaiting major surgery to a knee, it seems it was not open at 7.30. In the meantime, SydSoc will be stepping up the campaign.

And Silverdale!
Yes - Dairy Crest reach Silverdale, so you should be fine. Same comments as Pat re reliability. Sometimes I think they get held up by the traffic, so my pint isn't ready before breakfast. When we first came they delivered in cartons, which the local foxes found fun - chewing them and discarding them...

Ibere I can't remember the details, but you're likely to be disappointed by the grant won by the Mayow Park Bowls Club. If you want to learn more about what's going on in Mayow Park, you could do worse than join the guided tour of the trees in the park, 9.30 Sat May 31. But a word of warning - expre...

Live music, plant sales, teas, cakes, bee keeping, stalls ..
It can only be the Kent House Leisure Gardens May Open Day, this coming Sunday, 11.00 - 3.00, entrance between 91 & 93 Kent House Road (opposite Woodbastwick Road), and also from Fairlawn Park. The live music is the Balalaika Band, with one of our members on accordion http://www.balalaikalondon....

Tree expertise in Mayow Park, 9.30 May 31
Not sure whether to put this on the end of the thread about Sydenham Parks or trees, so how about a new thread? Anyway, Friends of Mayow Park have got Sean MacBride, one of Lewisham's arboriculturists, to do a guided tour of the trees in Mayow Park, meeting by the bowls pavillion, 9.30 a.m., Saturda...

Can we map these?
Steve:
This is the sort of thing where there should be a link to a Google map with markers for where all these buildings are. Anyone want to help set this up?

Lewisham Council / Enviroworks
I just got an email from Lewisham's Green Team: We have already commissioned Enviroworks to replant and maintain the planters in Sydenham Road. I have spoken to Peter Ranken about their current condition and he has assured me the work will start shortly. Enviroworks is the organisation running the p...

Lee wrote: what if the budget for the High Street was given to the Sydenham Society Thanks for the thought, but I don't think so - I don't think our constitution would allow it. Hope to join you ...
Admin:
I could join you tomorrow morning or Thursday. Can't do Saturday at all - shame, since I'd like to meet up with Sean at last. There's a Town Centre Management meeting with our official Town Centre manager coming up next week. I'll make sure they know what people on this thread are thinking.

The story so far ...
I just want to say that SydSoc members are hearing very positive noises from most of the players involved in deciding whether the gate to Platform One stays open or not, including from Transport for London. However, nothing quite definite, and nothing from Southern. It may be that Southern don't exp...

Sydenham Garden looking for new Garden and Services Manager
I learned yesterday that Sydenham Garden was advertising for a full time Garden and Services Manager - http://www.sydenhamgarden.org.uk/Vacancies.html - deadline for applications 28 April. The current guy, Nick Fry, is moving on. With the new Victorian design greenhouse, what an opportunity for a yo...

I'll try to find out about this, but on the subsidence risk I think it's a fairly straightforward consequence of plant physiology - trees with all those leaves take water from the soil and pump it out into the atmosphere, and big trees do it in a big way, so they'll cause drying out and subsidence i...

Some which they like planting in streets are Rowan and Whitebeam - same sorbus family. I'm not sure why, but I would imagine it's a combination of (1) them being native species; (2) not growing too tall; (3) having fruit, which is attractive for birds in winter; and (4) being quite attractive. Maybe...
