Perhaps some people are under the impression that not much was happening in Penge before the enclosure and the arrival of the Crystal Palace. It's interesting to compare these earlier maps of 1745 and 1799: http://www.rarekungfumovies.com/sydenham/Penge1745.jpg http://www.rarekungfumovies.com/sydenh...

What were the last timber-framed buildings standing in Penge? And what decade did they last till? 1860s, 1870s, 1880s or later? I have building dates for all the highlighted buildings below, and any others could have been old timber framed buildings--particularly those in grey--if not then weatherbo...

Early Penge History: problems with research

Penge and Beckenham were probably timeless villages that experienced very little change over the centuries--until the 19th--when many old buildings (some of great antiquity) were demolished to make way for new Victorian parades. Here is a typical photo showing the War Memorial end of Beckenham High ...

Ian has done an amazing job and even inspired me to research the history of Beckenham. His galleries are indeed exhaustive in terms of "photos", but unfortunately, a lot of Penge's history is hidden from the camera and to local historians to the point of ignorance. Illustrations add a comp...

Thanks to Ian and the crowd of 80 or so that turned up; much needed bit of exercise! :D Best info IMO was about the DIY houses off Honor Oak Park, for which I plan to share the video I captured. In the meantime, here's my photos, which I had to crop down a bit. :P (click for larger) http://www.rarek...

Bah, that looks like Iron Age, so I'm not impressed and don't really care... 207 BC, the Celts may have been trading with the Romans, but Britain did not have civilisation or architecture until the Roman invasion of 43 AD, unless client kings had formed an early town in Silchester just bef...

There's a similar diploma listed for Wroxeter, and here's some photos from my visit last year... Good find, Chris!^^ I was going to ask if you had found any rare pictures of Beckenham Road/Penge High Street. I think it's okay to discuss Beckenham and Penge on this forum, so I might start a new topic for those neighbouring villages. BTW off topic again: when are we getting a town sign for Sydenh...

Thanks for your reply, Steve! Shame that bronze serpent hasn't been photographed recently, in colour, with a digital camera. I take it it's not on display in the British Museum? I wasn't aware of the copper tablets(!); they are exceptional finds--not just for Sydenham--but for Roman Britain! I colle...
