Somerfields have got an interesting range from small breweries - at the moment 4 bottles for £3! I recently bought Hoblgoblin from the Wychwood Brewery near Witney and Black Sheep from the Black Sheep Brewery at Masham in the Yorkshire Dales. Both my guests pronounced these excellent! Meanwhile I wa...

Trattoria Rafaele
Montecassino's is currently morphing into Trattoria Rafaele - the building has been painted a lovely pale yellow and a bright red awning has just been installed. Looks like Sydenham is getting its latest restaurant!

It's a fine building and is mentioned in Pevsner (London 2: South, Bridget Cherry and Nikolaus Pevsner): 'By the LCC Fire Brigade's Dept, 1901-2. An especially picturesque example of its type. Fanciful octagonal tower.' I'm fairly certain it is locally listed; not sure when it closed down but I thin...

With all the interest in beer and pubs on this site, people might be interested in the online campaign at this link below: http://www.loveyourlocal.co.uk/validate-age The winning pub gets profiled in the Evening Standard, £15k for improvements and £1.5k for a staff event. I'm voting for the Woodman ...

I think that Natbeuk is right - I've looked at the plans carefully and there is no way to avoid the loss of one tree. However the tallest trees - the ones that screen the footbridge and which are in your sightline as you walk down Peak Hill Gardens - will remain. So long as a mature replacement is p...

Thomas - the Norwood Society sometimes has events in Crystal Palace Park and I have certainly visited the subway during one of these. This is their website (as a group they are particularly interested in buildings and local history):

Natbeuk and Chazza - I couldn't agree more about how great it would be to have a cafe/restaurant/deli in the HSBC building. With its outside space and the potential for a 'pocket park' (one of the suggestions in the upgrade of Sydenham Road by TfL) it could be a really lovely spot. Don't despair Cha...

Dear Poppy - the BBC analysis of the most recent league table for primary schools in England and Wales (Dec 2007) shows that Lewisham primaries are doing well, and in many cases scoring over the average for 'Contextual Value Added'. Adamsrill, a non denominational primary school, is doing particular...

Crystal Palace has a whole vintage market - at the back of the sorting office and Sainsbury's, accessed via Haynes Lane. Clothes, records, books - a real treasure trove! More info here:

The 'German' bridge
On another website... (SE23.com actually!) people are discussing the 'German' bridge - presumably the footbridge over the railway from Dacres Road to Sydenham Park. Anyone know why it's so-called?

The Perry Hill is great - fantastic pub and food. By the way, the pub over the road - the former Rutland - closed about 18 months ago when the lady who owned it retired... unfortunately it was bought by developers at auction. It had a great following as a venue for jazz and was also a very popular l...
