Re: 'The Importance of Being Earnest' at the Dolphin
Today is a fine summersday and tonight will be one of the warmest. This is a splendid way not to waste it! The Dolphin Gardens are probably the best and most beautiful new space created in Sydenham for many a year. Too good for just a drink. Not that stopped me from carrying a pint of Landlord into ...

Re: Vicious Dog Attack Sydenham Road
It is a shame they did away with the dog licence. These days it could be enforced with a RFID tag and compulsory third party insurance. So the market decides what dogs are dangerous and charges an appropriate premium. Dodgy dog, huge premium - quite a deterrant. Oh - no licence, dog confiscated/dest...

Tiffany - I have sent you a PM about our accountants.

Re: Vicious Dog Attack Sydenham Road
The police have taken action in Sydenham against the owners of banned breeds. Its always difficult deciding whether a dangerous dog is one of these but if the police can act they have a record of doing so.

Re: I refused to pay the 29% increase in utility prices!
The increase makes it even more attractive to consider solar heating. It generates enough hot water during the summer so that you can turn off the boiler completely for weeks on end and cuts down gas needed in the winter. Saves gas, prolongs the life of an expensive boiler and you may get an extra z...

Re: I refused to pay the 29% increase in utility prices!
Consumer groups have longed complained that doorstep pressure choices DO NOT lead to the best deals. Sometimes to the worst. Logic suggests that the very cost of getting someone to your home, paperwork etc is going to be a significant cost that has to be recouped on top of the underlying deal. Which...

Re: Hotel near Sydenham
The new Travelodge in Penge (over Ancasters) will be convenient when it opens. I've asked but they won't tell me. Otherwise the Travelodge in Croydon is right next to EC station so giving speedy access to Sydenham.

Re: Sorry peeps a little rant about committees.
Committees are good when decision require a multiplicity of disciplines or experience beyond the compass of a single individual. It also helps if they have a clear objective (something to do with the delivery of a product or service - not just existing) and an end date. Not to mention that the membe...

I'll second that. On my first visit I was astounded to be greeted by name by the waiter. Until I realised that his day job was our postman. And at a subsequent visit sitting all night nudging chairs with the person behind - and only on leaving, turning and realising it was Pussy Galore! Anyway last ...

Sorry Pantwetter. It might be an attempt to be funny but your post just came across as beyond tastelessness to me. You appear to shoot from the hip a bit too fast. This thread was someone's attempt to do something good for this terrible natural disaster. Criticism is OK. Ridicule is just cruel. Stuart

Re: BT = Rip Off Merchants
BT have rsponsibility up to the first (master) socket inside the house. Hence no charge. My mum had a really nasty but intermittant crackle. I was pretty sure it wasn't in the house so I took the risk. Turned out it was on the line down the road where a tree branch had worn away the insulation. No c...

Re: BT = Rip Off Merchants
There is a big difference. Gas leaks kill. Hesitating about calling the Gas people can not only kill you but people next door. That's why its free, its fast and a burden a gas supplier must take and re-distribute in all our bills. Re landlines - their main justification these days is to carry broadb...

Re: BT = Rip Off Merchants
I am afraid you may be rather wrong on this. The BT line you lease ends at the master socket. Any wiring & boxes beyond that belong to you. The installer (even if it was BT) will probably only warrant it for a year as is normal in most things. Gone are the days when the GPO owned everything incl...

Re: traffic lights at kirkdale roundabout
Putting traffic lights there will do very little if not nothing at peak periods. It cannot increase the flow of traffic. Whereas traffic lights will impede traffic flow for the other 20 hours a day making it worse overall. Tackling car use at peak periods is the most obvious if difficult solution. W...

Re: traffic lights at kirkdale roundabout
I don't see what difference yellow boxes would do at this junction. The problem is exiting down Sydenham Road. Holding them back just makes it worse. The problem is rarely blocking on the roundabout itself. The problem is getting a quart into a pint pots. Unless you can increase the flow down Sydenh...

Re: traffic lights at kirkdale roundabout
Traffic lights were included in an early version of the Sydenham Road plan. It then reverted to a roundabout as the traffic model showed they were no improvement. Of course what we end up with ... The problem is the exit over the bridge blocks. Traffic lights can only control entry to the junction, ...

Re: 255-269 Sydenham Road - Planning Application
But you simply can't dictate that "you can only buy one if you don't own a car", because how on earth are you going to enforce that rule? The practical way is to make the area a CPZ. Nice to see Eagle may be a fan. However why we should forgo 10 sq m of our public highway for somebody's s...

Re: Kirkdale Village – Street Beautification Project
There is no such thing as true altruism. What a deeply depressing view. I guess someone who makes it has, by definition, has never shared it. Hopefully they will have benefited by it without knowing. Which is kinda what much altruism seeks to do ... I only wish there was a little less cynicism. I a...

Re: Kirkdale Village – Street Beautification Project
Mike, You can't be campaigning for less flowers/more fly tipping. Most, but not all, people want to live in as pleasant environment as possible. Sadly this means taking some active effort to clear up the mess created by the few. Success makes the area nicer which may be reflected in house prices (a ...
