Susan Bullock concert at St Barts on 13 June
I thought Im Treibhaus , the third song in the Wesendonck Lieder was the highlight in this great concert; Susan Bullock's voice had really opened up by then and she got right to the heart of this wonderful, passionate song, the music of which Wagner used again in the third act of Tristan . In the se...

London Conchord Ensemble at the Dolphin on 8 June
Can't enthuse quite so uninhibitedly about this Sydenham International Music Festival recital. A technically superb wind quintet, but I found their programme (mostly American and all new to me) a bit insubstantial - too much Fun for my taste. The highlight, I thought, was Beethoven's variations on L...

Fidelio Piano Quartet at the Dolphin on 2 June
More superlatives, I'm afraid. I've got a CD of the Brahms op 60 piano quartet with Emanuel Ax, Isaac Stern, Jaime Laredo and Yo-Yo Ma, but listening to this lot play it live tonight was like watching a show in colour when you've only known it in black and white, or looking at a newly-cleaned Old Ma...

Sergey Dogadin/Martin Roscoe recital
Sydenham International Music Festival laid on another corker this evening. Dogadin's beautiful pure creamy tone sounded just right in the Beethoven 'Spring' and Cesar Franck sonatas, and he and Martin Roscoe seemed really to gell. There were also some virtuoso items, of which the Ysaye 'Ballade' son...

Sydenham Music Festival opening concert
Great concert tonight, and seemed to be a sell-out. Best version of the St Bartholomew Festival Orchestra I remember - superb wind section. Lyrical and really thoughtful account of the Brahms violin concerto with Sergey Dogadin. My only criticism is that I thought the last movement of the Jupiter sy...

Ducks - where do they live?
The last two mornings I've seen mallards - three males and a female, I think - grazing in Baxter Fields, in upper Sydenham. Presumably they are based in a pond somewhere not too far away, but I can't think where that might be. Anybody got any ideas?

Don't forget the election forum tomorrow night - see my original post. Still time to submit questions through http://www.ctsfh.org.uk. You can also write questions down on the night, before the forum starts, although obviously candidates will have time only to answer only a limited number

General election forum - in the flesh!
Churches Together in Sydenham and Forest Hill are organizing a (live!) 'general election forum' for the Lewisham West and Penge constituency. Candidates from the Conservative, Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties have agreed to take part. It will be held at 7.30 pm on Thursday 29 April at Livi...

I believe that in some countries the police routinely give local publicity to all (significant?) crimes as soon as they are reported. Why don't the Met do the same and set up a website for this purpose? Then we shouldn't have to waste all this time arguing and speculating (cf. also the other thread ...

I assume we are talking about The Bridge here. My wife and I go every week. We find the pool itself fine. Routine maintenance seems to be a issue however - I agree with Andy about malfunctioning showers and there is also the usual swimming pool problem about broken/missing locks/keys for the lockers...

Nobody on this thread seems to have mentioned the possibility of encouraging speed limit compliance by installing the indicative warning signs that flash at you when you're exceeding the limit. I always slow down when I activate one of these, although I recognize that not everyone might. Much more u...

I'm not criticizing the police for referring me to the council environmental health people. I automatically assumed, as I'm afraid I always do except in the case of immediate neighbours, that the alarm was a false one. Isn't that almost always the case? Or is Bensonby suggesting that we should ring ...
