Do you need really need to know that, Bensonby? Actually, it was because it was only when I went to bed, at about midnight, that I realised quite how obtrusive the noise was and that I wasn't going to be able to get to sleep through it. And then, in my naive confidence in the essential benevolence o...

Noisy and persistent alarm last night (Wednesday)
Did anyone else have a night's sleep ruined? A very loud intruder alarm (I assume) was set off at about 11.00 and didn't stop till after 1.00. It seemed to be somewhere at the Sydenham end of Dartmouth Road - possibly Sydenham Girls' School. I rang the police at about 12.45, who referred me to the n...

My personal concern is about the direct service to Charing Cross. Mr Dowd seemed a bit defeatist about this (col. 596) : 'That service has now been lost and, sadly, there is little or no hope for its reintroduction, because those pathways have gone.' What is it about a 'pathway' which means that onc...

Concerts at St Christopher's Hospice
I don't know whether everyone who might be interested knows that St Christopher's are putting on a series of monthly concerts - 'The Dame Cicely Saunders Concert Series'. I went to the second of the series this evening - the Alba Quartet, young musicians from Scotland - and really enjoyed it, partic...

Psi wrote: Apparently a vote for JD is directly a vote for Gordon Brown. That hardly seems fair, given that Mr Dowd was apparently involved in abortive coups against Mr Brown in both 2008 and 2009. I thought this was meant to be a forum for local issues! The candidates declared so far for Sydenham West and Penge are, I believe, Jim Dowd MP (Lab) Cllr Alex Feakes (Lib Dem) Cllr Chris Phillips (Con) and Cllr Romayne Phoenix (Green). Which of these is best qualified to represent the value and asp...

Beautifying our parks
Here is the latest addition to the amenities in Baxter Fields: http://i769.photobucket.com/albums/xx333/robinorton/007.jpg The lorry arrived yesterday (before the snow) to do some work on the trees, but got stuck in the water-logged turf. Cardboard was put under the wheels, some sort of jacking oper...

Advice please
I wanted to insert a photograph into a posting on the 'Town Hall' forum, but FAQ told me I couldn't do this direct from my PC but only via a non-password protected website. Is this a feasible option for non - techies like me? If so, how do I find (or do I have to create?) a suitable website?

Does forum etiquette allow me to wish all my lovely fellow-posters a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous 2010? If so, I do.

Like Trawlerman, I didn't know what a 'submarine sandwich' was. Intensive research has revealed that it is the American word for 'filled baguette'. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_sandwich
Snow
Usual problems in Radlet/Round Hill/Thorpewood this morning. No doubt we shall get gritted once the snow has safely melted. Why can't the council leave a grit bin in the street and leave it to us to do the gritting? Would help foster social cohesion, which I gather is a current buzz-word.

You learn something new every day on this forum. I thought 'Christmas Reefs' was some sort of in-joke to which I was not privy, but a quick google suggests that it is in fact a recognized variant of 'Christmas (Advent?) wreaths.' Does anyone know how long the new variation has been around and what i...

Annie wrote Doe's it really matter what word was used? Not particularly, in this particular case. But isn't it quite interesting to note changing usage and to speculate about the reasons for it? I've looked up 'outage' in the Oxford English Dictionary, and I see that the word is first recorded in 1...
