Re: Winsford House, Penge
Thank you, I was looking at maps from the 1800's. That corner area is still undeveloped then and if the house was not built until 1936 that explains why I wasn't having any luck. Do you know how Stephen Gee made his money?

Winsford House, Penge
Firstly, I know it isn't Sydenham, but I also have found very knowledgeable and helpful people here before. Does anyone know any history of the (Winsford) House which used to lie in Winsford Gardens, off Garden Road/Croydon Road SE20 7RN? Who built it/ owned it? There is now a BTCV Green Gym in Wins...

I have now had a reply from Tfl, though it has taken them 20 days (14 working days): The Tramlink extension to Crystal Palace is one of the previous Mayor’s promised projects which never had any money set aside to construct them. It previously had money allocated up to 2010 for development but there...

Well, maybe I'm a fast walker. Only Norwood Junction has any kind of reasonable off-peak service, and 10 minutes with a suitcase or shopping is much longer. This thread was comparing North and South London before. If you compare South East London with North, or even the South West where there are tu...

I'm very annoyed about this. There would have been a new station built next to me that would have regenerated my whole area (and it sorely needs it.) I admit that the financial benefit of increasing the value of my house price also made me very pro, but as I live exactly between three stations - Nor...

Statistically, the worst borough for crime in London is Hackney. The worst tube line for muggings in London was the Northern Line, and the worst station was Tooting Bec. I know someone who was mugged at Tooting Bec Station, so that tends to support that, however, I lived in Tooting for a year and ne...

There was no option for none of the above. Don't get me wrong, I think democracy and the secret ballot is wonderful, and I always use my vote, but I don't want any of them to become Mayor. I would have voted for Susan Kramer, Stephen Norris, or even for Nick Ferrarri. Ken Livingstones first mayoral ...

The Bridge over the River is a big clue though. If it were Kent House then it must be Beckenham Road and the River Pool - where the Tesco Express is now. If it were Copers Cope then it would have to be the River Beck, probably as it crosses Rectory Road, or possibly further towards Cator Park. Or it...

I think it just has the chrome topped Lagers. I was driving so I only drank J2Os and didn't look at the beers. Their Wine menu seemed a little expensive though. I quite like what they have done, but it is no longer a local pub, it is now a restaurant, and while the Penge/Anerley area may be short of...

Question re: Canal
I heard a caller on the Robert Elm's show on BBC Radio London, some time ago. They said that the reason for the strange tower at Forest Hill Railway Station was that it once held some kind of equipment for the locks on the canal - the building being built earlier than the railway line. Is that true?...

I live in Penge and we also only need an aerial in the kitchen, and then only a coathanger type aerial. In the rest of the house you don't need an aerial at all. And all the TVs have Freeview. As others already mentioned, the problem with the Crystal Palace Transmitter and the Penge/Sydenham areas i...

I think much safer designs of airships would be possible today with greater lifts using modern materials - carbon-fibre, titanium steel alloys, man-made fabrics - and Helium/ Warm Air gas bags. The main problem is that they are much too slow for modern passengers. Much stranger is why we never saw t...

There is a shelter in the grounds of Royston School in Penge. http://www.bromley.gov.uk/education/schools/primaryschools/royston_primary_sch.htm It is under the lawn between the school and Penge High Street. I've no idea if it is open for visits, but you could contact the school. It is the subject o...
