Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

Hmmm, I'm not against the place looking nice - I said so at the start, in referring to the pavements and trees. I'd add that removing the ugly railings has also helped. To pretend that 'gentrification' has no impact on house prices is complete nonsense though - people don't just move to an area beca...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

Fair enough - I guess we'll see on the 11th. I hope it does succeed. I passed someone on Silverdale on the weekend holding their own impromptu sale of food and drink to raise money for the kids, as they put it. So I guess it might work. Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

? Well aren't you? Feel free to correct me, but my distinct impression is that everyone commenting here wants the high street to be 'nicer' in some way, and though they may differ in the detail, they all mean fewer pound shops, betting shops, pawn shops, and chicken shops and more coffee shops, vint...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

Fair points, to some extent - I'm not down on Sydenham (in my opinion we have the best set of green spaces of any outer London area that I've been to) and the cafes and restaurants aren't awful, they're just not as good as some of the online hype would suggest (though Calabash we'll have to agree to...

Re: Suggestion - red light cameras

Yes, as a resident of KPR (obviously!) I have an issue with the speeders and also with people who seem to think their need to cut off the corner trumps my need to unload stuff from a taxi stopped in the middle of the road (because parking is a nightmare) - it's my street arseholes so go back the oth...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

It seems like knock it down and start again is the best option for Co-op. Penge, mentioned above, does have a McDonald's - it's odd that Penge used to be the butt of jokes as a notorious dump, but now seems to have leapfrogged above Sydenham in the 'cool' stakes, despite being further out from the c...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

Alright, I was trolling a little bit, but filling that shop is going to be a problem in my view - it's very close to both Tesco and Lidl (and PFC) and clearly neither Co-op nor Budgens made enough money to make it worth keeping open. There's a hell of a lot of snobbery about Mickey D's but when you ...

Re: sydenham needs an uplifting

I agree that the High Street is still a bit tatty, but the new pavements and trees did quite a lot to sort things out, compared to what it used to be like. Though the pawn shops and chicken shops aren't my cup of tea, I think it's worth considering what kind of bricks and mortar shop can actually ma...

Suggestion - red light cameras

I know our councillors read this, so can I suggest they consider installing red light cameras on at least two of the pedestrian crossings on the high street? I've seen cars run the lights at the crossing outside the bookshop and the one outside the newsagent between Trewsbury and Knighton Park Road ...

Re: Water pressure in lower Sydenham

This resolved itself, once they fixed the burst main in Kent House Road - despite Thames coming out and denying it was down to them.

Re: Last weekend of Jack & The Beanstalk in Sydenham

Just to say thanks for putting this on - we went twice (my youngest kept asking when we were going again, so we went for the second time today). I'm sorry it wasn't more popular - both times I went it was only half full.

I hope you make a go of this anyway - both your adult and kids shows.

Re: Water pressure in lower Sydenham

Knighton Park Road - hence the username.

Glad it's not just me then - Thames denied on the phone that there was anything going on, and it seems a bit lower pressure now, though I'm only going on feel and look rather than any scientific measurement obviously.

Water pressure in lower Sydenham

Anyone else got very high water pressure? Taps are gushing and it's made my shower lukewarm as the hot isn't enough to compete with the high pressure cold. Haven't done anything to make this happen that I'm aware of and the neighbours haven't noticed a difference. Thames are coming to have a look on...

I prefer the minimalist white lights to a load of baubles personally - the Kirkdale one was a complete dog's breakfast.

Re: Assembly Fund bid to restore painted shop fronts?

Nick Garret is a very good signwriter (I didn't know he was now based in Sydenham). He painted the logo we designed for Trattoria on their wall. If you were going to do something like that locally, I'd get Nick to train some locals up (he's a very good teacher, he runs classes at the Lovely Gallery...

Re: Thames Water - destroying our new pavements

I have a suspicion though that the new temporary repair was the work of the Council - they have been spreading asphalt liberally over all the potholes in the pavements around Sydenham, so they might have hit this one as they were passing.

Re: Thames Water - destroying our new pavements

The Fresh and Fruity one is I think the Cherry and Ice one referred to above? Couldn't see anything outside Fresh and Fruity anyway. Re: bad repairs, the Thames effort outside the Hardware store isn't great either, at least not compared to the original paving. Riney did a pretty good job first time ...

Have reported the LIDL issue - someone has put some barriers round it, so hopefully UK Power are already on the case.

Re: Thames Water - destroying our new pavements

There's another shocker outside LIDL where UK Power recently ran a cable across the road - they've left the pavement in bits. Not quite as bad as Thames's ludicrous effort outside Cherry and Ice but still a joke - is it really that difficult to put a few paving stones back where they were before you...
