Re: Speed cameras on Sydenham Hill

... Can I assume it's the new car, or that you're a driving instructor - surely you must have a better knowledge of cars than me but I would have assumed (or at least I was taught this when I learnt to drive) - that at 20mph you should probably be in 2nd gear, not 3rd - in which case your revs woul...

Re: Speed cameras on Sydenham Hill

And the other measure is SO simple. I simply don’t understand this ‘entrapment’ idea that forces all of the speed cameras to be bright yellow so we can see them clearly on approach. The only speed cameras that work well are the average speed cameras on the faster roads. Drivers are still doing 45mph...

Re: Speed cameras on Sydenham Hill

As I have already stated in my previous post, I have nothing against a 20mph limit where it is necessary such as on South Croxted Road where we are driving far too close to the parked vehicles lining the road on both sides to be driving at 30mph. If Southwark council had made that 20mph many years a...

Re: Speed cameras on Sydenham Hill

Another concern of mine is regarding the new drivers from London who opt to venture outside London at some point. I am sure that it is reasonable to expect that they will in fact be doing that? The test centre I use at the moment operate mainly on 30mph roads and have a couple of roads that are 40mp...

Re: Speed cameras on Sydenham Hill

I am sorry but I simply cannot agree with you that putting a 20mph limit on all roads in London is going to make roads safer and in fact I honestly believe that it will make our roads more dangerous. You yourself say, Sydenham, that it is never easy to change one’s behaviour overnight “if at all pos...

Re: Speed cameras on Sydenham Hill

I am a driving instructor in the area and I have to say that I think the 20mph speed limit on roads such as Sydenham Hill are increasing the danger rather than decreasing it. I have been overtaken many times with oncoming traffic having to take evasive action on several occasions, like today, when a...

Re: House in Amberley Road - Anyone know the astronomer?

I went along to the Sydenham Girls School and spoke to the librarian, Elizabeth Cooper, who kindly found a large photograph of all the pupils at the school which had the house in the background. I invited Steve along and we went to see the photograph which she is going to try to get copied for us. Y...

Re: Where was the nearest Tannery?

They are mentioned here at APA8 Deptford Creek Not sure if that's of any use to you http://www2.lewisham.gov.uk/lbl/planning/udp/schedule3.html But I think that Bermondsey is the place for tanneries. Also the simple search "Tanneries" on the British Newspaper Archive site with no filters c...

Re: House in Amberley Road - Anyone know the astronomer?

The building was here! The evidence was discovered by Gareth Hughes, a super sleuth who is on a group called Windmill Hoppers on Facebook of which I am also a member. Image from Britain from Above: aerial image of the mystery house.jpg And it survived way longer than 1942 because Gareth informed me ...

Re: House in Amberley Road - Anyone know the astronomer?

I emailed Steve Grindlay regarding this image. Steve could shed no more light than I on the building in this painting but he did point out that we did indeed have an important amateur astronomer in the area, a George Frederick Chambers, who did have a house built for him in 1865. However, this house...

Sainsburys sydenham.jpg This image was posted on a page on Facebook "Sydenham...back in the day" by a John Tidy who kindly gave me permission to post it here. The delivery boy was his father and as a boy he used to go shopping there with his mother. He went on to say that saw dust was spr...

My Early Years in Sydenham by John Holt

Did a search for John Holt and nothing came up so thought I'd let everyone know about this book.
It is a personal view and looks quite interesting although I haven't had time to read it yet.

You can get the book direct from John here and I don't think he'll mind if anyone calls him :D

Re: The Windmill that used to stand in Mill Gardens

Hi Rob, I love the book and must thank you for all that painstaking research you must have done! Were you a guide at Keston for this last Open House weekend? I was there on the Sunday so we probably spoke. Not sure if I was wearing a hat or not but my friend Frank is about 6’4” and would have been w...

Re: The Windmill that used to stand in Mill Gardens

Just ordered it from Stenlake :-)

I didn't know about this publisher and feel that they may be the publisher for the books I am planning on writing so all in all I am one very happy bunny!

Can't wait to read it.

Re: Crystal Palace Park Project: drop-in sessions this Satur

Just back from the drop-in today at the Lodge. Far too many people for the space at the Lodge!!! Couldn't get a look in but judging from some of the comments afterwards it doesn't seem as though we missed much. But did manage to get a seat for the history talk which was most interesting and has give...
