Rockbourne Rd area

I was wondering if anybody has any images or memories of the area around Rockbourne rd, particularly the top end of Stanstead rd. I remember old Mr.Russel's sweetshop and D. Sole the Newsagents with the Jubbly machine outside....I cant picture any of the other shops though. There was a wood yard opp...

There was a small brick works on Blythe Hilll too, although it may have been a mobile concern. A lot of brick firing detritus was found along the railway cutting around Garthorne rd, which could mean bricks were being made there when the railway cutting was dug. http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/images/...

unidentified tracks

I was looking through some of Steve's images, and, ever on the quest for an anomaly, I was interested in the layout of the rail tracks and buildings at the bottom of this image, especially tthe section to the right of the large gothic building...they just dont seem to tie in with the maps I've seen....

I would also recommend a visit to the Garthorne rd reserve, (again under the care of Nick Pond).
a long stretch of the towpath is still very tangible here, and you do get the feeling of sitting next to the canal.

indeed.
Sydenham rd is much wider than at the time of the canal, although, having rechecked my data, the canal did run along the lines fairly directly after it curved in from silverdale, roughly at the north end of the platform.
I imagine the bridge was extended eastwards, and widthways.

Interesting, so did they drain the canal to make the railway line? Yes, where it follows the line the canal was infilled, but the rail line is obviously more direct, and the canal at this point meandered slightly to the west, so that young lady in the picture is probably in the middle of the tracks...

Hi Greg I think this may be the image you mean. http://www.rarekungfumovies.com/sydenham/SydenhamBridge3.jpg The greyhound would be 50 yards uphill to the right of Doo's wharf, which is shown here. it occupied more or less the area of the up platform of sydenham station this view, from further north...
