Re: Begging outside Sainsbury's local
I usually give the guy money (who sits outside reading). Have chatted to him about south london and skateboarding several times. He asks for money but doesn't do so aggressively. Clearly Sainsburys don't regard him as a problem.

Business premises for rent on Venner Rd, just off high st
I noticed the small detached building at the top of Venner Road (in between the estate agents and the hall) has a handwritten sign saying it's available for rent as business premises. Compact and bijou, as spaces go. Might make a good place for yoga classes, say. Or a pop-up gallery space (nice whit...

The Dolphin's tables are never exactly rammed though, mainly because they've got a large garden out the back, something the Greyhound doesn't have.

Probably worth also posting this info on a couple of near-neighbour Facebook groups: eg Penge Tourist Board; sydenham/ foresthill buy and sell; Sydenham Mums; and Sydenham SE26 Community. There were a fair few stalls in last year's Penge Jumble Trail that would also qualify as Sydenham, for instance.

"Dalston High Street – not so dissimilar in demographics, structure, age and transport connections – recently got a Marks & Spencers foodhall" Oh come on, Dalston has been a trendy destination with loads of restaurants, clubs, music venues and art galleries, for over a decade. I don't ...

Re: Childcare near Sydenham station
Hadn't previously occurred to me, but there's a nursery in St Bartholomew's Church. Can't remember what it's called. That's definitely the closest nursery to Sydenham station.

So it opens at 4pm on Friday, right? Do we know if the kitchen will be open i.e. could we count on eating there Friday early evening?

Re: Food and drink venues in Sydenham
if anyone's ever been disappointed by Hibagon, they should give it another shot. I don't know about eating in, but we regularly get takeaways from there and it is IMO by far the most interesting and tasty food Sydenham has to offer by a country mile.

Sounds good but shame it could not have been an hour or two earlier to be truly family friendly... maybe next year?

Re: Sydenham wish list
Trying to be functional and mildly realistic rather than personal dreams (comic shop! Board game cafe!) You know Cherry & Ice puts on regular gaming (both boardgame and videogame) evenings? 1. Decent family-friendly pub with good food. At the moment, that niche is being filled for me by the Ale...

I don't understand how you can object to a Nandos on health reasons, but approve of the Greyhound returning as a pub?

I always just thought I missed them because I'm often out of town  Was it just not successful? I think it just died a death. I don't think it ever really had the right kind of stalls frankly. That's not a criticism of the stallholders or their products, it's the context. I mean, I bought some ...

Re: Childcare near Sydenham station
I'd contact several nurseries as soon as possible, as you might well end up on a waiting list. Not many nurseries near Sydenham station, unfortunately. Cuddly Bears is reasonably close, which everyone seems to love; little walk up the hill. There's a place called Cherish on Jew's Walk too, which I v...

Sydenham has a jig!
Someone once wrote a jig in honour of "Sydenham Wells", I just discovered... in around 1750 http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=www.village-music-project.org.uk/%3Fpage_id=785.no-ext/0170 Here's my very scratchy fiddle recording of it. Apologies for the sound quality: played directly into my...

I often wonder about the feasibility of getting in touch with the owners to organise a pop-up art event. Like the Crystal Palace Underground craft fair (coming up soon), or similar events at Anerley Town Hall, where local artists can have stalls. I thought the same thing about the empty Budgens - wh...

Re: sticky: RUMOURS: CINEMA AND NANDOS COMING TO SYDENHAM
I was in Nando's the other day and I threw caution to the wind and went off-piste, ordering chicken livers rather than the usual Churasco Thigh Burger (a comfort-food staple). I was expecting to deeply regret said decision. But they were genuinely delicious, particularly good accompanied by a salad....

Re: Save Beer Rebellion - we need your help!
Can't remember what Beer Rebellion's monthly rent was but it was nothing like £20K per year. It was cheap enough that one of the former managers was considering keeping it on just as storage, so it must have been comparable with general storage rental. This corner unit here is under £1000 per month:...
