Re: The Bell pub Lower Sydenham

Oh I don't doubt it's dodgy as hell. I had a look at its Facebook page and read a few eyebrow-raising things. Still, I would like to have a look in there just the once

Re: The Bell pub Lower Sydenham

I've had a peek through the windows once or twice when picking up/dropping off my son at nursery (Little Elms, just opposite Tudor Livesey Hall, another place I'd like to have a look at some day). The actual interior of the Bell looks really impressive and old - proper old wood beams etc Yeah, I'd b...

Re: Farewell to the World of Richard Bishop

It did occur to me that the words of the ballad share the same rhythm as "I am a poor wayfaring stranger". So would fit the folk/hymn tune... I did a bit more googling and uncovered some more details of this tale: http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/print.jsp?div=t18680406-385 1868 was the year...

Re: Farewell to the World of Richard Bishop

I found it in a paperback book called "The Common Muse", an anthology of popular broadsheet ballads. I bought it, appropriately enough, from Kirkdale Bookshop, which has an excellent secondhand poetry section (and an aladdin's cave of a basement). This is the book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/...

Farewell to the World of Richard Bishop

A Sydenham-related ballad, in which a convicted murder bemoans the fact that he'll never see Sydenham again, having done in his neighbour from Forest Hill...

Re: Remove the rail franchise from South Eastern

Was so pissed off about the routine daily cancellations and delays that I was considering organising a picket the other day.

Re: Sushi of Sydenham

Had home-delivery on Friday night. Partner had Kimchi Ramen which she thoroughly enjoyed. I tried some and it was very tasty, with lemongrass and coriander and chill flavours all very perky and satisfying. Side-orders of gyoza and pork dumpling very nice too. I had a duck don buri, which I'm sorry t...

Re: Bollards

Nigel, whereabouts were you thinking of specifically? I haven't lived round here long - coming up to 3 months - but I've done a fair old bit of tramping the streets in that time, what with nursery drop-offs to Bell Green and commutes to work via Penge East and Sydenham stations. I can't recall once ...

Re: Best Roast?

I can vouch for the Woodhouse roast. Both quality and quantity: I have never known a plate piled quite so high.
(Their burgers are also excellent, for what it's worth)

Re: Anybody got £1.2m going spare?

Nice to see that it's currently an "asset of community value", which makes it harder for it to be used as something other than what it was before. I was initially thinking that it was rather overpriced – it is hard enough to turn a profit from a pub these days, let alone a pub that cost yo...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Well yes, I would rate Nando's as a step down from your average Chicken Jerk except it would be me who was spit roasted by some family members. I'll whisper this very quietly but a part of me would not be unhappy if it became a Nandos. For the simple reason that ... I'm a parent. And branches of Na...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

does anyone who's seen plans know if it's going to be the kind of place that would do coffee during the day, and beers wines at night? room for childrens buggy's? a place that local parents of small/young children could meet on a weekday morning, but also enjoy a drink on a Friday night? There's no...

As I understand it they allowed to carry on until after the appeal. Assuming they lose. Would be nice if appeal before Christmas, but expect it is many months away. The family event there that I booked tickets for in March next year is going ahead. So the appeal, or at least the results of it, will...

Re: Zanzibar- Licence revoked

I've never been inside, so I've no idea what it's like.

I've wondered if Tudor Livesey Hall would do for a Northern night.
It was good enough for Alexander O'Neal last month
Nothing like the same kind of music of course, but still...

Re: Zanzibar- Licence revoked

I had just bought a ticket for the 'Big Fish Little Fish' parent & toddler afternoon disco there in March next year. The one scheduled for January sold-out pretty quickly. I wonder if, post Zanzibar losing its license, it might be possible to ask the freeholders permission and then apply to the ...

Very sorry to hear that.

That's an unusual time to be burgled: the sort of time most people would be in on a weeknight. How did they get in?
