Crystal Palace Park Road

Steve Grindlay once wrote that the rather fine and grand homes that line CPP Road in Sydenham were designed by someone of note. Seemingly this person also was the architect of a rather famous stately home (if memory serves). Despite trawling this forum and searching all over the internet I can't see...

I thought the 1818 was one of the old ones, where turning on the air conditioning equates to opening the windows. I like the fact that most people wait on the concourse for the train to be announced before they actually go to the relevant platform (despite it being the same every night). Priceless....

I'm the same. Even if I get to London Bridge at about normal time (6.10) I sit on the 6.25. It's just so much more 'pleasant' than the 6.18, for a variety of reasons, only some of which I've mentioned. We must have sat near to or even next to each other many times down the years. I would have though...

I tend to get the 6.25 home. The spot you mention (carriage 2 second door) was always best 'pre-barriers' as you were directly opposite the gate which was open by the time you pulled in. I did used to get the 6.18 but soon realised that this service was a) busier b) took longer and of course c) stop...

Did you ever gain access to Dacres Wood reserve? Shall we try to reinvigorate the idea of a 'Canal'' walk'? Moving from Sunnybank to Betts Park to Dacres Wood to the Garthorne Road reserve.

I noticed you spoke of doing it from your thread but I couldn't see any evidence that it actually occurred.

I don't know, I've never ventured there. Best to ask Boon as he seemed to hint that it was and you've clearly inferred that meaning also. Would be interesting to see if that is the point he's making especially as the way he described his route he either lives on it or very, very close to it. If he d...

Two Half's - The Dolphin - Golden Lion - Prince Albert - The Bell Taven [?] - Railway Tavern It's the Prince Alfred.... They used to sell beer, but alas they have stopped. Never been in the Bell or railway (the one near lwr sydenham station?)...I always they looked a bit rough. Apologies, it is the...

I'm just bumping this thread up for greg. Thank you Will. I found it a fascinating read. I was always aware that there is the one remnant in Anerley (wrongly thought by Barbara to be the only remnant; http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/postcodes/places/SE20/stories/CAT116.html#top As for Falkor findi...

Interesting, so did they drain the canal to make the railway line? Yes, where it follows the line the canal was infilled, but the rail line is obviously more direct, and the canal at this point meandered slightly to the west, so that young lady in the picture is probably in the middle of the tracks...

It appeared that they had cordoned off the entire access to platforms 1-6 from street level and were hanging around on these platforms but for what??! well, I'd hazzard a guess that some crime-related incident had occured  Erm, maybe - couldn't have been that serious though as there were lots...

Hadn't though of the Bell. I suppose for a Lower Sydenham crawl the route could be: Two Half's - The Dolphin - Golden Lion - Prince Albert - The Bell Taven [?] - Railway Tavern In case any confusion breaks out may I point out that my understanding of Lower Sydenham covers anything from the railway t...

It does help thank you Will. I'm very pleased you've responded to my question. I can visualise where everything was now (I think). For example on 'view54' the pallets stacked on the left hand side on the inlet would have been where the Railway Tavern now is and to the right where Doo's Wharf would h...

But is Gary's performance in 'Lease' a patch on Kim Jong-il's "I'm so ronery"?

A film that as with In Bruges is wrong on so many levels but oh so funny.

Am I the only one who thinks its a total waste of time having these gates at Sydenham station? when in the evening you get off the train and the attendant just opens them all ? There was a piece on Radio4 recently whereby a man had been arrested for smoking in a pub, I cannot remember where exactly but it was some Godforsaken place north of the river, might have been Acton. Anyway, he was smoking a spliff but thought it was OK as it was a spliff and not a cigarette. Even m...
