Goodness me I can get a decent seat at Covent Garden for that. Rather more skilled players delivering longer performances in more comfortable conditions. The economics of football has gone quite crazy. 30 or 40,000 people paying a modest fee was enough to reward 22 or so young men. It would appear E...

That's why I (and most other pedestrians/cyclists?) prefer zebra crossings. The road planning control freaks prefer high maintenence and environmentally unfriendly controlled crossings. Shame we always get ignored.

There is surely a presumption that killing is wrong. The only defence is that it prevents an even worse outcome. You could justify the death penalty if it lowers the murder rate. Taking a life saves a life. I do not think this has been established. Until it has then I have no problem with Nasaroc's ...

I think my problem is to do with my perception of the attitude of the liberal middle classes,[as seen on here] The Guardian /Independant reading crew, towards the ordinary working man, by which I mean the people doing the jobs at the sharp end, not able to indulge themselves in flexitime/working fr...

I'm not sure comparing now and a golden age is ever useful. Every time had its own good and bad points. However, we live in only one time at a time. The past (which is more for some than others) is past. It helped create the now so it can be blamed for today's woes too. As someone said - move on, ge...

Take no notice Postman this forum is full of petty minded and self centred folk who have no idea of the bigger picture. This weather is bringing them to the fore Really? I just calculated the complaining posters in this and the weather thread as a percentage of the total in those threads. I dare yo...

Try a bike. Cheaper and healthier (provided you watch out for white van drivers mobiling in any language).

Hindi? Would you be happier if it was Welsh or Gaelic? Would other EU languages be only semi-annoying? What language do you use when abroad?

OK you caught me out on the bravado front. I would have to weld a Somerfield baguette to cause you serious damage. The same goes for Waitrose. Sainsbury's are harder. It is Tesco who take the biscuit for the most disgusting baguettes known to man. Midnight in Elmer's End Barty?

If you're the kind of person who needs excellent customer service and even a friendly chat when you go shopping, you are probably best avoiding Sainsburys altogtether (and Tesco. And Asda. And Waitrose. And M&S. And definately Scummerfield). I must leap to the defence of the Somerfield ladies. ...

Not much to add as I try and avoid it. My wife prefers Penge Sainsburys and Beckenham Waitrose is my favourite. But if its after 10pm one has very little alternative. While there may not be much on the shelves there is rather more in the aisles. Trailers stacked high with boxes. These completely blo...

Diego, what exactly is the problem? Is your objection that modern design is incompatible with the existing period buildings or just this particular modern design? If so, what don't you like about it?

Early Morning Jim Dowd

Our local MP loves me so much he put me on his emailing list. Today I was the lucky recipient of his list of his Early Day Motions (now lets keep this decent!). While I can not be described as Jim's greatest fan I was pleasantly surprised by the sometimes radical and challenging motions he has attac...

Are you saying that all the violent criminals should NOT have gone to prison for many years. If this cures the guy of crime. No problem. On the other hand three years prison may qualify as a first degree at the University of Crime. In which case the shorter the better. Which is why I find this whol...

That's the point Eagle. One side sees it as just an easy iPod. The other as a life shocking experience. Getting the youngster to both understand and care about the consequences of his action is the challenge. I know one feels very, very angry and its hard to avoid revenge. Is that going to help sort...

Most muggers are young men. Most young male offenders give up offending after 25. Do we really want to terminate a life, marriage & family for a youthful escapade? Putting them in jail also has a dodgy outcome. Uncomfortable facts for anyone who has been mugged. Including me. What would I say? &...
