The opening of the side gate and the widening of the pixie-sized gate have been achieved by the Sydenham Society - after years of campaigning!

new coffee shop for sydenham

Hi Kster Do you have any details of the application? I look at all planning applications at the town hall on behalf of the Sydenham Society and I don't remember seeing an application for a coffee shop - I think it's something we desperately need! In answer to Back-ache - the shop you are thinking of...

Dear Gillyjp What a horrible thing - you are quite right to call them low-life! However, these things do happen everywhere, and I'm sure you aren't being targeted. We've had eggs thrown at our house - and on Saturday night white paint was poured over the lower end of Kingsthorpe Rd - a neighbour spo...

I like Over The Top - they've just moved from Kirkdale to the shop next to Somerfields. All their staff are really good - and very friendly too.

The greengrocers shop is lovely - people are terrific, and there is a good range of produce (they may not be 100% organic as in ED but they are definitely seasonal - for instance, they had all the different kinds of plums and greengages you could want thru September/October). Somerfields seem to be ...

Hi Ella I think they are in a handover stage - the new owner (Stephen Mears, from the funeral directors opposite) told me that they are taking down the 'cage' structure - he said it made the place look like Beirut! When I spoke to him the Saturday before last he sounded very upbeat about the whole s...

Do you mean the shop opposite the Dolphin (they used to be called the Flowersmith)? I heard last week that they have been taken over by Stephen Mears (who owns the monumental masons opposite) and they appeared to be flourishing! The florists near the station has closed - which was a shame as they we...

The Broadway Theatre in Catford (next to the town hall) has a great programme of indie and offbeat films - all for a fiver! Go to: www.broadwaytheatre.org.uk; you can park for free in the car park behind Laurence House in the evening - or catch the bus. It's a really good venue. And if you want to f...

The shop formerly known as 'the Hempire' has been refused planning permission to convert to a restaurant - and I've noticed a 'to let' sign above their door... I just hope we don't get another pound shop! The installation of the extractor fan was part of their plan to become a restaurant.

Hi Ezza I think your nearest Bikram yoga class is north of the river - in Old Street, N1 (not too bad a journey back though on the tube and train). If you fancy Iyenga, yhere are two fantastic classes at LA Fitness - Saturday afternoon and Monday night, with a really brilliant teacher - always quite...

Thorpes conservation area

In response to Graeme and David's inquiry - the Thorpe Estate became a conservation area in 2000 and shortly afterwards was given an Article 4 direction (which means that it benefits from fairly strict planning controls). In practice this means retention or refurbishment of the original windows and ...

The Greyhound

In response to Guest - the Sydenham Society spent years trying to get the Greyhound listed during the late 80s/early 90s, before the refurbishment which resulted in the pub being re-named the Fewterer and Firkin. Sadly English Heritage did not consider the interior to be good enough for listing - so...

White sofa

A pristine two-seater white sofa has been dumped in Silverdale - just in front of the set of gates that have 'official' graffiti on them (about 5 mins walk from the station). Why go to DFS when a perfect settee is there for the taking!

Free personal care for the elderly

I would like to know where the candidates stand on the issue of free personal care for the elderly and those with conditions such as early onset dementia. This has already been implemented in Scotland and was recommended by the Sutherland Commission in 1999.

Cafe La, near to Finches on Perry Vale, at the back of Forest Hill Station, is brilliant - formerly the rather eccentric Foret des Amis, it is now a cool, contemporary Indian restaurant with quite individual food and outstanding decor and ambience. Go now before it gets too busy!

Yoga classes in and around Sydenham

Sydenham has some brilliant yoga classes - and, in particular, some excellent Iyengar teachers! On Saturday afternoons (3-4.30) and Monday evenings (8.30-10) you can do a brilliant class at LAFitness in Kirkdale with Dorothy Richard Evans (check with them, but I don't think you have to be a member a...
