Re: Weather and travel

My service from Sydenham Hill to Victoria ran only slightly late this morning, but with fewer carriages after problems elsewhere on the network. Shame - I quite fancied the day off!

Re: The Bad News

You could still end up stuck with a very uncompetitive rate as banks change their policy, and I wouldn't want to be in a one-bed flat with two small kids - not as bad as having your home repossessed, but still some real short/medium term pain for those concerned. I can see why people say why prices ...

Re: The Bad News

Negative equity can also stop you re-mortgaging - handy if your existing mortgage becomes uncompetitive, or if you want greater security by switching from a variable rate to a tracker - and not being able to move is also a problem if you need a bigger home, for example if a young couple start a fami...

Re: A little light mugging.....

Sorry to hear that - glad you weren't injured and didn't have anything stolen.

I have to say though that I've walked up and down that road late at night plenty of times without any bother so hopefully it was just a one-off.

Local opticians

I have recently been to Boots and then Specsavers (both near where I work in central London) for an eye test but have not been entirely happy with either. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good local independent optician in Sydenham or Forest Hill (or failing that other nearby areas)?

Re: How do you Sydenhammers enjoy yourself

Is this a coded reference to wife swapping??? If not, the usual range of leisure pursuits are on offer in or around Sydenham e.g. the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace Park, various sports clubs, evening classes, churches and other activities. Some of these are advertised on this forum e.g. t...

There were some on the top of Wells Park Road (near the park) several weeks back - after a short while they disappeared - not sure why/ what for.

You can also see the Capitol in Forest Hill - I've been before, and well worth seeing the bits you wouldn't normally see if you just went in for a drink - hopefully it will be possible to go on the old balcony on the first floor.

Re: Dartmouth Road?

Forest Hill and Sydenham both have quite a few coffee shops, many of which are fairly new - I would particularly recommend Sugahill, Blue Mountain and Kente in Sydenham - you should find plenty of comments on all these if you trawl back through past discussions here. There is also the "Wellbein...

Sydenham and county/ parish boundaries

I have a series of questions about how the historical boundaries relate to Sydenham: a little bit obscure I know but funny to think that a boundary sign on a busy suburban street could have ancient origins. I know that historically it was in Kent, but part of the County of London since 1889 (and suc...

What are the sort of grounds for objection that might influence the Council's decision? I presume that simply saying that it wouldn't be upmarket enough might not be enough!

I'm not Darcy! I'm sure I know who SalubriousSyddersin is - he is well known on this forum and a thoroughly good bloke (if sometimes controversial in the past). The Location episode on Sydenham (referred to in a EDF post - a different one from the one Michael refers to) can be found here - most amus...

Re: waitrose looking for location

Well if Waitrose can open in Croydon (after purchasing a Somerfield store) then there is hope for us here. Might be worth contacting them.

Dickp: the two sites you mentioned - the first is the old Greyhound right? Have tenants been signed up yet? What is the second site?
