I don't think the DWH has quite made the right transition from good old-fashioned local pub to trendy gastropub, having lost the unpretentious friendliness of the former and failed to deliver the type of food of the latter. I could though see why the owners wanted to change - whenever I went there b...

Let's go to the Red Lion for blues on the 18th, then.

That way, if I get bored of you lot I can go and watch the band.
Do you mean the Golden Lion?

Sounds like a plan to me.

I think overall the forum is moderated very effectively, especially given that this isn't a big budget site that can afford a big army of moderators. As is the nature of forums, and social media in general, there is a fair bit of rubbish in it (some of it from me) so you do need to set your expectat...

It does sound like a lovely idea, but are you sure there aren't any foxes near you? There seem to be no end of them round where I live in Upper Sydenham.

Have you contacted other local running clubs? There are two in Dulwich for example (Dulwich Runners and Dulwich Park Runners - which is slightly confusing), and one (I think) in Beckenham. You should be able to find people there to run with, and plenty of advice and support.

Plaque dedicated to Dietrich Bonhoeffer unveiled

Bonhoeffer was a pastor at two German Churches, in Sydenham and Aldgate in the 1930s before returning to Germany, where he was executed in 1945 in the final days of the Nazi regime. A plaque was unveiled at the site of the Aldgate church recently: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/artic...

There are Sydenhams in Belfast (just near Belfast City Airport), Christchurch (New Zealand), Melbourne and Sydney that have been mentioned in a thread a few months ago which you can search for. As for meet-ups, some of us met up for a walk around Crystal Palace Park yesterday which we arranged throu...

The service from Sydenham Hill to Victoria is normally pretty good and not too crowded at all - from Victoria you just a District/ Circle line tube to Embankment (only 3 stops) right next to Charing Cross.

You can also get a direct service from Lower Sydenham if that suits.

Thanks to everyone, especially Falkor, for such an informative and interesting walk - the five hours really did go quickly. It's just incredible how much there is to learn about the palace.

I walked past on Saturday and saw a notice in the front window to the effect that it was closed due to rent negotiations, thanking all customers and saying they hoped to reopen on a new site shortly (can't remember the exact details) but it was definitely shut.

The name was covered in an earlier thread (I haven't put a link to it but you should be able to search for it). From what I can remember, there was a cinema on the site, and at one point it (or the chain of cinemas) was called Naborhood. But you're right - it is a bit silly!
