Re: Manors at the time of Domesday?

To answer my own question, it would seem that the manor of Lewisham was all there was in 1086, as the manorial boundaries would have taken the same shape as the parish boundaries. One thing I'm extremely confused about after reading: *Lewisham History and Guide by John Coulter *History of the Boroug...

Manors at the time of Domesday?

Was Lewisham the only manor in the area that existed at the time of Domesday or did they not bother to include Sydenham and Brockley in their survey? I know they at least existed as hamlets, but after sub-manors of Lewisham were created in the 1200s, does that mean Sydenham and Brockley never existe...

Re: The Windmill that used to stand in Mill Gardens

Excellent research, Rob! If there was a windmill in Peak Hill prior to Mill Gardens off Wells Park Road then I would have expected to see it in the painting of Sydenham Common:

The last field of Sydenham and Forest Hill

When did the London town of Sydenham cease becoming part of the rural countryside of Kent? To answer this question is not easy. Besides parks and recreation grounds, wherever one looks in Sydenham and Forest Hill, one is presented with a very urban environment built up with streets, houses and shops...

Re: Problem with the London-To-Lewes Road alignment...

Wow, I never realised the Pool River had been completely diverted over the years!!! http://www.rarekungfumovies.com/sydenham/dig1.jpg http://www.rarekungfumovies.com/sydenham/dig2.jpg This should be a straightforward dig to locate the Roman Road! I guess it must be only a few inches below th...

Here's my theory on the course and alignment of the Roman road through Sydenham: (click below image for the full-size unclipped version of it)

Pool River (including Ravensbourne and Quaggy)

Presumably the Pool and connecting rivers were much wider in the Middle Ages. Do we know if boats or barges sailed down these rivers at all, possibly transporting wool or crops from Lewisham, Lee or even Sydenham towards London and the Thames (or any ports along the way)? Do we know what crops were ...

Many thanks Lewis; really generous of you to share that photo! Thanks also to those who assisted with getting the image posted onto this forum; it would have to rank as the best contribution here in quite a long time. No worries; go ahead! Just send us the link to your review once you have published it. Glad you enjoyed the page. I forgot I had even done it, and it could probably do with an update, though very few pics have surfaced since then.

Re: Places in Catford

Sorry guys, my research into Southeast London is currently on hold until I sort out my wedding and other problems in my life, which is needing ever more responsibility, so I have very little free time lately. Does anyone know any registry offices in or around Sydenham and Forest Hill by any chance? ...

Re: Sydenham and county/ parish boundaries

In 597, shortly after the Dark Ages lasting almost 200 years since the Roman withdrawal, Kent was converted to Christianity (the religion may never have completely died out since 312 and the Roman Emperor Constantine). In 601 the Cathedral of Rochester was built and in 604 the Diocese of Rochester w...

Off-topic: Roman Southwark and Greenwich

I have an interesting hypothesis: I believe most of Deptford and Greenwich was under water during the Roman period of British history, with Watling Street running along the shoreline! That means the temple discovered on high ground in Greenwich Park (nearest Roman building site to Sydenham and Lewis...
