Walking - Special walk on Friday night!
Hullo everyone, This coming Friday, 2nd August, there's a walk that includes many of the best parts of SE London's 'Green Chain' footpath network, and that means the best woodland and views in London. Its fairly long at 22 miles but will be at a leisurely pace. The difference is that it's overnight!...

Hullo everyone, Enjoy walking? Want to see the best landscape in London? What starts in Sydenham and goes to the Thames? You probably all know of the 'Green Chain Walk'. You might have wondered where it goes and why so very many regard it as the best footpath in London. On Saturday 29th the seventh ...

Today - Victorian magnificence - Crossness
Hullo everyone, Sorry for the last minute notification. This isn't in Sydenham but there'd be no Sydenham without it. In fact, the whole of South London's development depended on just one building. Crossness pumping station. If you'd like to see one of the finest Victorian industrial buildings in th...

Tuesday 14th - A rare treat
Hullo everyone, Could Sydenham have been developed without sewers? Probably not. Our Victorian forebears realised that and sent a main drainage network Eastwards, making today's South London possible in its wake. At the sewer's end they had to build an almighty steam pumping station capable of lifti...

Re: Green Chain Walk - Fri 20th - Special event
Many thanks to all those who attended this very successful walk. I appreciated the company of such a good group of people. ST members partook so I know this forum works! The scenery and views were splendid. They always are, yet no doubt improved by the over-night transition in the weather. I think I...

Re: Green Chain Walk - Fri 20th - Special event
Hullo Yve, This walk happens twice each year. At night in June or July and in daylight on the last Saturday of September. The day version has been going for years and is promoted by either the Green Chain itself or 'Walk London'. I'll let everyone know about that nearer to its date. You could give i...

Re: Green Chain Walk - Fri 20th - Special event
For those attending this excellent if eccentric walk, the weather is looking good! Rain ended by 22.00 and the possibility of clear skies by sunrise. I checked the route today and none has been washed away, muddy in places though.

Green Chain Walk - Fri 20th - Special event
Hullo everyone, Over the past six years I've had the privilege of meeting many of you through Walk London's guided walks. They will hopefully return in September but in the meantime there's an unofficial yet bizarrely enjoyable walk on the Green Chain network next Friday night. All are most welcome ...

Re: Green Chain Walk - Sat 11th - DIFFERENT!
Thanks Alib, Yes, this is a walk that one should only partake in if your sure of your abilities, the few 12.5 miles will be a bit of a march and there's very little transport available. The daytime version on 24th September is designed for no more than average pace and there are plenty of chances to...

Re: Green Chain Walk - Sat 11th - DIFFERENT!
Hullo everyone, Some notes for participants in tonight's walk. For the first 12.5 miles or so we'll *have* to walk at slightly over average walking pace. Three and a half miles per hour will do the job. This is so that we've arrived at the best possible vantage point by the time the sun rises. If yo...

Re: Green Chain Walk - Sat 11th - DIFFERENT!
Just to add to my reply to Alib,
There are several Night bus routes available if anyone gets worn out. First is at Downham, then Shooters Hill Road and then Plumstead and the remainder of the course. I'll have maps with the route No.s etc. tonight.
Best - Ian

Re: Green Chain Walk - Sat 11th - DIFFERENT!
Hullo Alib,
No problem. Trains to from Erith to London Bridge start before 7am (it takes half an hour). Then change for a train direct to Crystal Palace or wherever. You could go by bus (99 from Erith to Woolwich, 122 from Woolwich to CP) but it would take a bit longer.

Green Chain Walk - Sat 11th - DIFFERENT!
Hullo everyone, Do you enjoy walking? Would you like to participate in something out of the ordinary that starts in Sydenham? I lead most of the walks on SE London's 'Green Chain Walk' long distance footpath network on behalf of 'Walk London' and the GCW itself. Literally thousands have taken part. ...

Re: Free guided walk on Saturday 28th
Hullo everyone,
Once again I've forgotten to mention that this walk isn't really suitable for prams or buggys thanks to two kissing gates in Sydenham Hill Woods Nature reserves. If you don't mind folding buggys and carrying there's no problem.
All the best

Free guided walk on Saturday 28th
Hullo everyone, How about a free guided walk along the Green Chain footpath network on Saturday? With apologies for the very short notice, Walk London has asked me to conduct this little stroll that exercises both the legs and the brain. They'll be plenty of historical photos to display as we make o...

Hullo Mummycat and all who took part, At 38 the attendance was just right. I was left with a strong impression that all who participated thoroughly enjoyed it! Once the figure goes over 50 it's difficult to give full value. Despite my droning on with historical details we arrived at CP Park at only ...

Free, guided walk on Sydenham's Green Chain
Hullo everyone, Would you like a free guided walk on the Green Chain Walk's new extension through Sydenham? The Green Chain finally ventured Northwards out of Crystal Palace Park last September and a good 200 people took part in the opening walk from Nunhead to Dulwich Picture Gallery. Alas, the wea...
