Re: Sydenham's Green Chain walking weekend.

Hullo everyone, Many thanks to all who braved the weather and attended the opening of the Green Chain Walk's extension on Sunday 26th September. Thanks also to those who took part in the fifth Crystal Palace to Erith 'Megawalk' on Saturday 25th. Does anyone have any photos of the Nunhead - Dulwich -...

Re: Sydenham's Green Chain walking weekend.

Hullo everyone,

I think I should have said that the Green Chain extension walk on Sunday 26th poses some problems for Prams, pushchairs, buggies etc.. There are kissing gates in Sydenham Hill Woods Nature Reserve that require lifting of such vehicles, to quite a height.

Sydenham's Green Chain walking weekend.

Hullo everyone, The weekend of 25th & 26th September sees Sydenham finding itself firmly on South East London's Green Chain footpath network. Yes, at long last, the GCs extension from Crystal Palace to Nunhead will open on Sunday 26th. An important new amenity, this is the first major extension ...

Re: Help! Aerial view of The Crystal Palace

Hullo 'bigbadwolf', I'll certainly provide photos as soon as the model is finished. Although I supplied the drawings the model is being built by someone else. It might be some time before he gets started as he's first finishing off a large, dead accurate, model of Denmark Hill station. The Crystal P...

Re: Help! Aerial view of The Crystal Palace

Hullo again everyone, I've very nearly finished the drawings for the small scale model of the Crystal Palace. May I ask for a further favour? Can anyone point me to a clear image of the northern end of the building after the 1866 fire damage had been repaired. Simply, as it was from the first fire u...

Re: Help! Aerial view of The Crystal Palace

Very many thanks to all who've replied. The help given here will allow me to complete the drawings for my friends model. I couldn't have asked for more. His model will be very small but the drawings will work at large scales. For those who are interested, they'll be in 'vector' format. Once finished...

Help! Aerial view of The Crystal Palace

Hullo everyone, A friend wishes to build a small model of the Crystal Palace. I've offered to draw the plans he needs and have the dimensions of the components. I've done the Central Transept but am now 'stuck'. Can anyone direct me to a clear aerial photograph of the building taken from the South W...

Green Chain Walk - Info and, more nice walks!

Hullo everyone, You might have wondered what's happened to the Green Chain Walk's Northwards extension through Sydenham. In January almost a hundred took part in a walk along the course. I led that walk and stated that the new route would be open shortly, probably in April or early May. Well, local ...

Thanks for walking!

Hullo everyone, Many thanks to the very many of you who took part in this walk. It was a real privilege to have such a pleasant group for company. I do hope you enjoyed it. With such a large number, no less than 96 in all (!), it just wasn't possible to give the detail I'd like to have done. I've a ...

Walk on 31st January. Additional information.

Hullo Julian, Sorry for the delay, I was out leading another walk today! I'm hoping we'll be at Hornimans at about 12.30. The Café may be busy so I suspect we won't be leaving until 1pm. Last year most of us ended up around the conservatory. Please note that you MUST be signed-in to this walk. Eithe...

Tim, that's very kind of you and am sure your generosity will be well received.

If we're going to have a welly throwing contest there will be no losers as the water is only 3 feet wide and one inch deep. I'm going to jump it! (I hope).

Best

Walk on 31st January. Additional information.

Thanks to Tim Lund and Mikej for the replies.

As Tim said, there's a little fording to be done at the end. To get onto the Dinosaur's island we'll have to cross the top of a weir. It's about three feet wide and the water will be one inch deep.

I hope this doesn't put you all off!

Best

Nice walk on Sunday 31st - All welcome!

Hullo everyone. I tried to put this in the diary but it wouldn't work. On Sunday 31st, at 10am 'Walk London' is offering a guided walk from Nunhead station to Crystal Palace. Some of you joined this a year ago and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. This year it's a bit longer but still leisurely and ha...

Hullo everyone. Despite clicking 'remember me' I'm having to sign-in every time I access the forum. Indeed, if I have the forum open and receive a PM notification via email and click on the supplied link, I have to sign-in again to read it. I'm using Safari on a Macintosh running system 10.4. Thanks again Will. I'd like to send a photo I have of the top of the ventilation shaft / cable duct from a 1930s Southern Railway magazine. It's an interesting structure! Alas, I can't work out how to post images here, despite having read the FAQs.

All the best

Hullo Will. That's a wonderful photo and yes, it does help very much. Probably the best overall view of the line between the tunnels there could be. Would it be possible to get an enlarged view of that part of the photo? From the new condition of the flats in the background I presume the date is aro...

Hullo Will,

Thanks very much. I don't suppose you know of any photos of the former transformer station that used to stand between Upper Sydenham station and Paxton tunnel? It fed the main line in Penge tunnel by means of cabling running down one of the ventilation shafts.

Thanks again

Re: crystal palace high level rail walk

[quote="ALIB"]i remember seeing a while back that there was an organised walk from Nunhead to Crystal Palace, following the route of the old high level railway (5m or 8km). Does anyone know whether this is something happening again - Will Greenwood has posted many excellent photos thus far...

Walk on 31st January. Nunhead - Crystal Palace.

Hullo Sydenham, I hope you don't mind me popping in with news of a walk that I think many would enjoy. On Saturday 31st January 'Walk London' invites all from Sydenham to a leisurely taster of the Green Chain Walks forthcoming extension from Nunhead to Crystal Palace. Generally it follows the disuse...
