Interesting points you raise, Ulysses. But take care: dinosaurs lorded it over this planet for many millions of years, looks like the much vaunted homo saps will do well to achieve a fraction of their existence! Also 'superior clientele' ? Please!!! God save us from a being nation of gastro pubs wit...

Gastropub?
Newly fangled idea. Nice, on occasion, I suppose. Each to their own.
But I suspect that 'gastropub' is often just and excuse to charge OTT.

I go to a pub, primarily not to 'gastro' but to have a nice drink with company of my choosing and in a certain amount of comfort.

Perhaps the Golden Lion's lavs are a bit in need of a seeing to. But it is a cosier environment than the Dolphin.
Last time I was in the Dolphin I had to do a 'double take' at the prices for the drinks I ordered. Are they having a laugh?

That being said...It is 'rather nice' ...Isn't it?

Hi Badrul,
I have been a regular customer of Garam Masala since it opened and of the site's former incarnations as Bengal Spice and The Meghna!!

I have always enjoyed the food and hope the high standards of Garam Masala are maintained and even improved upon.

What an excellent fraudian shlip!! It was definitely subcutaneous. See, we can have a larf in Sydene-HAM!! Or at least a bit of a grin.
[And it doesn't cost a groat or even a goat.]

The Dolphin is rather over-priced. The Lyceum Tavern, a very decent Sam Smith's pub just at the north end of Waterloo Bridge sells a very decent pint in pleasant surroundings for a much lower price than our much lauded 'Dolphin'. Now, how comes? Somebody, methinks, is extracting the Michael, perhaps?

Gawd Blimey, guv. Strike a light! [etc]...I do believe things may begin to look up. Perhaps the time has come for a real renaissance in proper English cooking!

Re Ackroyd's 'London'...Great book, and excellent read. Recommended without reservation.

Ulysses, sad to say...You probably have point. There is another decent venue in Eltham...But, they also do bangers 'n mash etc. Luckily, their proper pie 'n mash hasn't suffered [it's still pretty authentic] I know I've been banging on a bit but I think we may be ripe for a return to a bit of 'authe...

I was weaned on pie and mash!

There's a pretty decent shop in Sutton. Roman Road in the East End has several. East Street has one and I believe there are a couple in Bermondsy.
The one in Sydenham seemed to lack a certain authenticity

I still believe a proper, authentic pie and mash shop [original English 'fast food' ] would do the trick. Better than yer ubiquitous chicken shop, GBK,
'Subway' etc...

Any body out there of like mind?

I still don't get it. Sandwich? 'Sub'? You really don't need a recipe book to make your own...To your own design, with ingredients carefully chosen and lovingly prepared by yourself. There's no substitute for a DIY sandwich or 'sub'.

Exactly, BBB.
Sandwich,'filled baguette' or whatever; make your own!!
Cheaper, probably healthier and exactly as you like it!
