Girton Road car park - introduction of parking charges

Post by Parkrunner »

Just noticed in the latest email from the Sydenham Society that Lewisham Council is planning to introduce parking charges for the Girton Road car park.

If this is done without the corresponding introduction of a CPZ on the surrounding streets, the already extreme difficulties that residents face in finding parking anywhere remotely near their front door is only going to get significantly worse. Why would you pay to park in the car park when you can park unrestricted and for free on a neighbouring street?

Feedback can be provided to the council at: parkingdesign@lewisham.gov.uk

Excellent news that charges are being introduced. Time for residents and councillors to drop their objections to a CPZ being implemented across the Borough.

The notices displayed in the car park state that charges would apply for stays of more than two hours. I wonder if they therefore mean 'fines' for parking in excess of two hours, with vehicle number recognition cameras installed as many car parks now do?

The intention used to be "free to serve the High Street" so two hours free does seem to align to that.

As it's likely true that many all-dayers would avoid the charge if they could park on a nearby street, why can't there be offered (or offered also) a daily charge or weekly charge that isn't eye-watering? (Or maybe there will be.)

I saw today that Girton Road car park has now got cashless parking. While it is still free for two hours, you have to by phone and presumably give bank card details. What about people who don't have a mobile phone with them?
Personally, I don't see what was wrong with getting a timed ticket from a machine.
