Blackbird Bakery

Post by Eden Green »

Has anyone noticed the blackbird bakery signs in the window of the old party shop. That would be nice for Sydenham. It’s a good south london business.

It could possibly be Santander, the bank/building society which has been empty for a while
Anyway all good news for Sydenham

Noticed the new signs today and that the cake shop next door has gone - wonder if BB will take that site too...

Was wondering the same - but that’s a very big site when you include the bits behind the shop so I wonder if Blackbird would need it.

Shame about the old bakery - I quite liked its old school feel and it did very good doughnuts.

The Cake Store is still operating as an occasion cake supplier, with orders taken online and shipped nationwide. So I assume they are still using everything bar the shop front.

RIP Slatters as a lot of us remember it. The waft of baking bread in Mayow road on a cold morning.

Blackbird's Instagram says it will be the beginning of August with a small pop up for bread, coffee and pastry whilst they finish off the rest of the shop and a garden.

It looks like the Cake Shop has been let as well, although presumably to someone else. Anyone have an idea who it might be going to?

Opens on Monday the 16th of August at 8am. By the looks of it not a full opening. Only a takeaway service to start with.

I popped in for some lunch and a coffee today - very friendly service and a delicious sandwich! It's lovely to see different places open up on the high street.

I see that there is a planning notice affixed to the old Slatters premises notifying an application to build six flats and the construction of a mezzanine floor. Their website says that they still supply cakes but no longer bespoke ones. I assume the manufacture has been outsourced. I never quite understood why Slatters folded as it always seemed thriving, with a good lunchtime trade in sandwiches etc., and should have been relatively lockdown proof. Maybe the owners, who according to the planning notice are still members of the Slatters family, are cashing in on the land value of the building and it’s going the way of so many other shops and pubs. Though I never rated their bread particularly, it’s a shame it’s gone.
