Why not visit the Best Secret Garden in Penge on Sat 9th Jun

Post by FergussonFamily »

People from Penge and surrounding areas are invited to take part in a FREE open event at a local “secret garden” on Saturday 9th June 2012. The volunteers who restored Winsford Gardens, Garden Road, Penge (SE20 7RN) will be hosting activities and entertainment from 11:00 to 16:30 including kid’s activities, a plant sale, and creating wildlife habitats.
The event is part of the Open Garden Squares Weekend, in association with the National Trust, and will showcase the work done in the last year by The Conservation Volunteers’ Penge Green Gym.

Historically, the private gardens of Winsford House, the gardens hold many original features, including ornamental shrub beds, fruit trees, a rose garden and stretches of lawn. It had however been sadly neglected, but just one year ago under the guidance of The Conservation Volunteers (formally BTCV) local volunteers stepped in to create an exciting, attractive, community space with food growing beds, meadows, wildlife habitats, and an urban orchard.
Such volunteering to improve local green spaces has been demonstrated to help with community cohesion, to help tackle depression and ill health. It can instil pride and confidence in communities, bring families together and help people into work or training. The volunteers need your support to reclaim green places, to make a difference and to build communities.

The day will feature children’s fun activities including a treasure hunt, crafts and much more. There will be guided tours by the volunteers who helped transform the garden and plants for sale from our greenhouse. Come and pick up tips on how you could create your own wildlife garden, or just bring a picnic and soak up the atmosphere! There will also be opportunity to find out how you can become a part of this exciting project.
