For some time now, the choice of who gets to play on a Wednesday has been quite contentious. We don’t all have the freedom to post at 10pm, for example, and it has favoured the people who are already playing because once the match has finished you know to sign in. There are no written rules about when you need to sign in, or how many you can sign in using one account. Although it was requested in years gone by that people got their own account to sign in.

Tonight, in the bar, we discussed a possible change to the way we ‘decide’ who gets to play. I would really like to move away from the battle to get a game. And I would rather move away from imposing a whole set of rules that people need to follow about when you can sign in, how many people you can sign in etc.

We are proposing that anyone who signs up, gets to play. I will organise booking a second (five-a-side) pitch. If we have enough to fill the second pitch, we will, and if not then maybe we can either play rolling subs, or book two five-a-side pitches. If numbers demand it I could look at booking another 7s, but it would be at a different time.

I would appreciate your help, and support, in trying this. Meaning maybe taking turns playing on the 5s, which most people would probably rather avoid.

I wouldn’t envisage this making a difference to the individual cost of £9 to play.

I try to pick the teams before we start to maximise the time on the pitch, not sure how we will do it next week but we will try to work it out.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

PS this is not because all of a sudden I am number 17!

Hi Darren,

That sounds like a great way to ensuring that everybody gets to play.

Cheers, JP

I sign multiple people in as it's easier as most arent regular players but I totally agree it shouldn't feel like a battle to get a spot for the next game. I'll only be putting smithy and sheeps in every week from now on and have asked the irregular players to make their own accounts if they wish to get a spot. I usually have one of the guys tell me to put them in after they've finished playing as I've always stuck to signing up people after the game is finished to make it fair as middlesborough and I have spoken about before so hopefully no battles from here on out.

Alana, thank you for trying to help - it is appreciated. I hope you didn’t feel pressured into changing things, that was not my intention. There are a few people who sign up multiple people and most people have at least a +1.

The group signing ins, and the time that people sign up is not really the issue. It is symptomatic of the real issue in that we have far too players for the number of spaces.

Hopefully we can fix it by offering everyone a game regardless of when, or how, they sign up.

At least we can try, together.

Goals do not have another pitch available at 9pm next Wednesday. Although I will keep checking.

I have booked another 7s at 9:30pm. There is a 5s available at the same time.

Assuming we do get the numbers I suggest the first 12 or so kick off at 9pm, and the rest kick off at 9:30. I will play at 9:30.

The following week there is a 5s available at 9pm, which I have booked, and I’ve booked the 7s at 9:30.

Let’s hope I don’t forget to cancel at least one of them!

Happy to help and try make it a fair game with the signing in time and the player ammount no problem. I would like to add it has always been first come first serve in regards to being in the first 16 but seeing as the numbers tend to be more than that but not quite enough for 2 pitches, i suggest that names get put into a randomizer of some sort to make it fair that every one is getting a chance at a game instead of the regular usual players all the time.
