Advice needed - second hand road bikes for kids?

Post by Rachael »

Hi Sydenham cyclists - we need to buy a new bike for our 12 year-old. He's a keen cyclist and it's probably time to look at a road bike. Where do we look for a decent second-hand one? I'm assuming there must be other kids who have reasonably high-spec bikes that they have outgrown. Is there a particular forum or online resource we should be looking at?

There is a website called bikeradar.com and they have a really good classified section. The site is for really keen cyclists so you tend to get good bikes and no time wasters.

Another possibilty is Winnie at SE20 Cycles on Penge High St, it's mainly new stuff but he does have the odd 2nd hand bike, anyway, he might be able to suggest something and is connected to Penge CC which (if you don't know about already) has a really active kids section based at Alexandra Junior School.

Good luck!

A bit hit n miss for 2nd hand kids bikes but cyclechat.co.uk has a good classified section. Not completely trustworthy but there's always E-Bay.

I would highly recommend an Isla Bike. Wonderfully made specially for children. Look them up on their site and read in Bike Radar. Is your son is keen then its definitely worth the money. Second hand command high prices but you will resell for nearly what you paid.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. In the end, we decided to leave it until after the winter and he has grown so much we have been able to buy him a new adult bike with a cut down seat post that should last him a few years.
