International music festival children's concert 18 June

Post by Robin Orton »

We took our two year old grandson to this this morning. Lots of children of all ages, the younger ones (plus an alarming toy snake) sitting on a big carpet at the front, the majority attentive and interested, all well-behaved. After the overture to The Marriage of Figaro, the theme was brass instruments: movements from concertos for trumpet (Haydn), trombone (Gordon Jacob) and horn (Mozart), with interesting litte talks/demonstrations by the soloists (did you know you could use an inflated balloon to play the trumpet?), then Tubby the Tuba as the grand finale. Those whose birthday it was got Happy Birthday to You , accompanied by full orchestra. The whole thing lasted an hour. Look out for it next year - an excellent introduction to classical music for any youngster.
