New to Sydenham
New to Sydenham
I recently braved the move from north to south London, partly due to some really helpful information given to my partner on this forum - thanks for that. Now the evenings are getting longer, I was wondering if there are any sports clubs/book clubs/evening classes/social clubs running in Sydenham, or any website I could look up that advertises these things? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you provide.
Hello. Try to get hold of a copy of Lewisham Life, a free (quarterly I think) magazine delivered by Lewisham Council. It has a "What's On" section, which I think you might find very useful. I expect a local library would have one.

New to Sydenham
The Hormiman museum runs courses and I think there are lots of events at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, which are all a short bus ride/drive away. There is also some sort of further education college near Kelvin Grove school , I think (Lewisham council webiste would be best for this). You could try the Spa in Beckenham for sports but I tend to prefer Dulwich sports centre in East Dulwich. I know there is another one nearer the Save Centre but have never tried it.

There is Sydenham Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Lawrie Park Road (opp St Christopher's Hospice) which also has squash courts and social events.
LA Fitness at Cobbs Corner has a 12.5m swimming pool as well as the usual gym and specialist classes. Alternatively there is the Bridge Leisure Centre in Kangley Bridge Road with similar facilities and a longer pool
For evening classes go to Kirkdale Learning Centre close to Kelvin Grove School.
Someone on this Forum tried to start a book club once at the Dolphin - I'm not sure how successful this was - perhaps someone could tell us if this is still happening?

Has anyone gone to any of the evening classes organised by Bromley Council? They have a centre in Penge so should be fairly easy to get to.
Also two running clubs are based in Dulwich - Dulwich runners and Dulwich park runners - judging from their websites I think the latter might be more suitable for beginners but does anyone have any first hand experience of either club?
If its more the social side you're interested in I wonder if there is any merit in organising some sort of pub crawl around Sydenham? That way everyone can make up their own mind as to what sort of pub they like to have in the area based on their own experience. Start off at the Alfred and end up at the Dulwich Wood House?

I will try and get a copy of "Lewisham Life" as suggested by a few members.
But in the meantime I wonder if there are any established book clubs in the area, or indeed enough brand new people (like me...) who would like to start a brand new one.
I have been to the Kirkdale Bookshop; was surprised with the lack of forthcoming information (dare I say lack of interest too, baring in mind potential readers would most probably go there to buy books?).
I love the area but, like one of the readers, I too moved from north to south london (I love being here, incidentally) and would like to resume a few social type activities such as choirs and book clubs.

My Daughter runs for the Dulwich Runneres , and says that although its a serious running club they welcome people of various abilities, some people just like to go for long walks in a group,or gentle jogs etc, they have a good social side as well,
my daughter has just come back from running the half marathon in Slovinia where she had a brilliant time.
so it depends on what you are looking for.

Indeed, Sydenham Community Radio will hold its next quiz on Wednsesday 24 November, 8.00 pm at the Golden Lion. £2.00 each with teams of between 4-6. If anyone wants to come on their own they can always join a team. The is also a prize raffle.
