I visited my forth Sydenham last weekend....

Post by dickp »

Sarf London, Sydenham near Sydney, Sydenham near Christchurch...and now Sydenham in Oxfordshire.

It's a tiny village, with a local pub, a church, a manor house-style affair, some converted barns and thatched cottages. Lovely!

If I knew how to post photos on this thread, I'd show you all.

Has anyone else been to any other Sydenhams around the world?

Damn, no. I was visting Thame, which is mid way between Sydenham and Forest Hill.

I've found the local website for Sydenham. The pictures aren't very good, but they give you the idea of what it's like.

I was also unable to resist visiting other Sydenhams on my travels.

The Australian Sydenham has a Dulwich nearby and train service by .. Connex .. remember them?

Oxfordshire's Sydenham is here: http://sydenham.biz/
And there is council estate in Gloucestershire that shares our name. There is another in South Africa and Sydenham College in India. Oh and another in Ontario, Canada

I know that area you refer to fairly well Thomas. It's a staunchly loyalist area (96.4 percent Protestant according to the 2001 Census) and is the stop before Holywood! Yes, there's a Holywood in N.Ireland.

I lived for a time in Holywood and to bring anyone up to speed who doesn't know East Belfast, Holywood is very close to Stormont.

I wouldn't recommend the Irish Sydenham to many...

Sorry to double post...

A few months back I was searching for a clip of the Sydenham fire and happened upon this youtube clip...I did think initially I didn't recognise the Sydenham to Dulwich Hill 'ride'. Then it hit me. This is the Sydenham in Sydney you refer to dickp and biscuitman1978?

That's the one. My photos are of the area to the south east of the station; the car in the video heads north west from the station (the station is visible on the right at 0:06).

There is a Sydenham in my home town of Christchurch (New Zealand). I used to have my origami class near Sydeham Park there.

@noangel - Haha, what a small world. I'm from Merivale and just googled it to see if I could find one in London - unfortunately there's not, I'd have to move to Fleet!

TimA - even if there was a Merivale in London Town, Sydenham will always be the place to be no matter where in the world you are

my wife was born in Lemmington, in a place called Sydenham, and we've been to Sydney, Melbourne, and Christchurch, but as we were not living in Sydenham over here yet, we wouldn't have thought of the significance of looking for them.

there's a place called Stockwell, just off the A417, near to The Hot Air Balloon pub, we see a sign for it when travelling to Worcester, and always joke about having not left London yet.
