Windows 7/Internet Explorer 11, I'm ashamed to say.

No shame. But being of the other persuasion I know nothing of IE11 settings. There should be one to stop you having this bother. Maybe a fellow traveller can volunteer some help?

Or you could give Chrome or Firefox a whirl. Just Google them, download and see what you think. Just make sure you decline their invitation to make them your default browsers until you are convinced. If not, just de-install.

Thanks, Admin. I find the pop-up automatically disappears after a minute or so, so it turns out it's not really a problem.

I have in fact got Google Chrome loaded onto my computer, but use it only in emergency. I've always assumed it's for techies, not for the likes of me. We elderly technophobes prefer to go with the Microsoft herd, on the principle of 'safety in numbers'. I'm afraid that if I use Chrome I shall press the wrong button and cause my PC to blow up - or at least render it unusable, lose all my data, have my identity stolen, be accused of downloading child pornography, etc.

The point about Chrome is there are fewer buttons to press so getting some decent porn 'by accident' is even harder

On the other hand it maximises the screen space for your actual website. It has one box for addresses & searches so you can't put 'em in the wrong box. It used to be really fast but as with all good software it has got damaged by bloat as developers keep adding features instead of keeping it simple.

Of course Chrome comes from Google so they, instead of Microsoft, will know where you have been, are thinking and even what you have not yet thunk. But then if you are married you will have given all that away already.

Happy New Year,

No shame in that from where I'm standing or sitting Robin. I'm still using good old XP, mainly because it supports my old-ish recording and music editing software. I went over to Firefox, previously just known as Mozilla, about 10 years ago mainly because of pop-ups, etc experienced with Internet Explorer. Firefox is frequently updated too. Must admit I've never looked back.

I'm quite heavily defended with Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Malware and other clean-up tools (highly recommend 10-bit Advanced system care). All of this slows my PC performance but with patience has kept me safe for many years. I also have a Kindle fire HD tablet (Android os) but still prefer my old PC for some reason, possibly a bit like an old but very comfortable pair of slippers, hard to get rid of.
